Yeah, the Marine knows how to take care of his wimmins!

My wife and I will be attending. We are very excited!! Hotel room has been booked. The organizers negotiated such a good rate with Ramada, it lured me away from my favorite and usual hotel, The Hampton Inn (which is right across the street). I just couldn't pas up $59/night!

We are considering taking the Blue Ridge Parkway to Wytheville, instead of doing Interstate 81 the whole way. Basically, the BRP parallels I-81. We are coming from Yorktown VA.

I'm a Norfolkian & will be headed there, also. It's really a full day ride to get there. I'd like to catch up with you but I'll likely high tail it out 58. Really a bummer. There isn't much choice riding out from the part of VA. I live almost as far east in VA as you can get.

Hey Luvtoride, we live only 30 min from Norfolk. You are welcome to join us!! If we were to take Rt. 58, it would take us roughly 6hrs (without traffic). If we take the Blue Ridge Parkway (I-64W to the BRP), the trip will take us roughly 7.5 hrs. So basically, we are adding 1.5 hours to the trip, but that is worth it to us, in order to stay off of the long and boring Rt. 58, lol. Plus, it gives us an excuse to stop at Kings Gourmet Popcorn, which is located at the entrance to the Blue Ridge Parkway.

One of the coolest things about this forum and events like EOM! Many of us have never met in real life yet meet up and ride together to stuff like this! Mona and I had the pleasure last year of meeting up with 08FJR4ME and his wife and showing them some wonderful PA countryside to get off the slab on the way to Lewisburg. This year we each took an extra half day just to ride out of our way slightly to meet up with Topspeed1 and his group since we know what kind of fun that ride will be.

Look forward to meeting you all in Wytheville!

My Wytheville Observations

Last week my son ('09 FJR) and I met up with a good friend in Wytheville for three days of great riding. We stayed in Wytheville and rode out every day. We had great weather and very little traffic to deal with. We estimated that if we took the low average of 3 curves per mile, we did about 600 curves per day.

Roads: You can't go wrong with any of the two lane roads in the area as long as you stay out of West Virginia. The WV roads were patched, rough, gravel in the corners and had some tar snakes. The VA, TN and NC roads were smooth and well maintained, with little traffic. Our favorite was route 58 north out of Wytheville which crossed Big Walker Mountain. My son was the route planner. I will get him to post here before you guys take off in September.

Hotels: Your planner made a good choice and got you an excellent rate. We stayed at the Hampton and paid about twice your rate. The Ramada is an outside entrance to each room. If you ask for a down and out room, you can park your bike right outside your door.

Food: In the Ramada is a bar/lounge called the 13 Monks. It had a very good selection of beer and the food was good. About a mile down the road is the Sagebrush Steak House. Good beer selection and good food with large portions. My favorite was El Puerto right around the corner on Main St. Some of the best Mexican food I have had this side of Mexico or a border state...Ever. Go there at least once.

Adult refreshment: Wytheville is in a wet county but... If you want to buy your own bottle of hard liquor you have to go to the ABC store in downtown Wytheville that is run by the state. It closes at 7 PM. Domestic beer you can buy in the gas stations. The bars at 13 Monks and Sagebrush serve a full selection of mixed drinks.

The riding is fantastic in that area and I am sure that your group will enjoy the experiences that you will have. It definitely made our do it again list.

WV has some of the finest riding roads in the eastern US!

Agreed FJR-Pilot. I ride WV often... It may possibly be time of year... or area that you rode. I'd assume this time of the year, you'd be running into good conditions, though. Bummer...

Thanks for the info, Barn Boy. I'll solve that pesky liquor problem by bringing my own. Let me quote my dear friend, hppants. "I'm bringing enough tequila to knock out a moose".

I think you meant 52 north of Wytheville. It is fantastic! Hopefully you two had a chance to run across Highway 16 from Hungry Mother State Park up to Tazewell. That is also an epic ride!

I can't wait to hear your son's thoughts on the area. What a lucky guy you are to have your son riding along with you!

I love that popcorn place that you speak of. I stopped at that place with my friend, Jay back many moons ago. He had no truck. It was cold & windy. The owner was at the side of the road with a gas fired pot making kettle corn. That was his only offering at the time. I was surprised to come through the same area the following year & he had a full blown retail truck. & your offer of joining sounds good. There is a really good chance that if you're up for it, you'd have more joiners.

Their caramel kettle corn tastes like waffles with maple syrup!!! Best kettle corn I've ever had!! I usually buy a large bag full and throw it in the truck and eat it throughout the trip. Anytime we ride the BRP, we always incorporate a stop at Kings Gourmet Popcorn.

Again, you are welcome to join us. I wonder if there are others from the Southside or Peninsula who are going to the EOM?

I agree that the roads and the scenery in WV are outstanding. Our experience with the roads was limited to the areas to and from the New River Gorge bridge. There is construction on the bridge which cut it down to the inside lane only.

Our observation to a man was that the condition of the roads we were on were not as good as the VA roads. No dispespct to your state. We have had many a good ride in WV in past years.

Roger that on 52. We liked it so much that we rode it in one direction 3 times and the other direction twice. The first morning was perfect. Zero traffic and nice and cool. Like having a private windy road to yourself. I didn't pay much attention to road numbers. I just followed him and grinned a lot.

This was the 3 rd year for a father/son ride. I finally got him off his (my old) 700 Fazer and on an FJR for this year's ride. Every time we took a break he was more in love with his FJR. It is good to get away for 4 or 5 days and share our motorcycle passion and the experience together.

Probably is. I'm pretty sure that my buddy, Jay may be in. He's riding in from Woodbridge. I'll bet he'd want to join. Also, Bob (Intech) from King George... but his plans may vary. Then there is Mike from Fredricksburg. He attends EOM a lot of the time.
