My ears are shot from jet blast, but my experience with the stock exhaust is almost total silence............I did the trooper mod just so I could tell the thing was running at stop lights. I would think you have an exhaust leak somewhere...............droning on is not normal for this bike...........

We have determined that droning is not normal.

I think it has also been determined that the inside end baffles are missing on my mufflers.

A Trouper mod might have been done by the PO.

Sounds like you might have nailed it?

FWIW, mine came with aftermarket cans. I almost never hear the exhaust while I ride, yet friends who have ridden behind me often remark on the sweet exhaust note when I accelerate.

Now that you've found out what the problem is, a set of stock cans is an easy fix.

Search / watch the Forum classifieds or better yet, place a want ad, you'll find a set in no time.

Good luck!

really 150 hrtz. ?????????????????????????????
you have a question?

Thanks Silver for the link.

If I end up keeping the bike, I will do this restoration mod.

I consider the problem "solved".

Thanks to all that contributed.

And that "fixes" the problem I guess.

Exhaust notes/volume are a personal preference. Some have done the T-mod, either stage one or all the way to stage two, and love it. Others, like myself, tried it on a pair of used cans I bought on the forum, and hated it, with or without earplugs. Now I have staintunes, and really like the sound.

I tried to like the stock cans, but after two years I just couldn't get accustomed to that super quiet mildness. I learned to ride back in the 70's, on 350 Hondas, 850 Nortons, a Yammy XS 750 triple and an XS 1100. The Norton in particular sounded sweet to my ear. To me, a pleasing sound is an essential part of the experience.

If you get an opportunity, listen to an fjr with some staintunes, remus, or two bros cans, as well as OEM stockers, and go from there. The T-mod 'undo' seems a simple way to get back to the stock sound, although it may require tailcones to finish off the job.

I have listened to another stock gen 2 system and the "drone"I hear is just the natural tuning of the mufflers.

At least I now know I'm not chasing my tail.

I'm an audio engineer and probably more aware or sensitive to what I hear.

I really like the quiet exhaust note at RPMs above 4000.

When I want some noise, I ride my 650 Hawk with a race muffler
