I'm new here to the forum, just purchased a 2003 FJR1300, and was wondering what would be the top 5 or so aftermarket add-ons ie: a better windshield, front fork brace, Heli risers, softer grips, throttle lock of some type, a better? seat, etc you guys get my drift. Any opinions are more than welcome along with the info on where to get the parts.

It would help if we knew what you wish your bike did better. What kind of riding do you do?

I think you can't go wrong with aftermarket suspension, front and rear.

I also like the aftermarket throttle tube (forgot the name) and throttle spring unwind mod (easily done yourself.) Do those two things and your right hand will be happier.

Best thing is get familiar with the forum here, Steve-O. There have been many many threads on favorite farkles, etc. My '05 has its original suspension, for example, and while it's probably late in its life span, it still serves my riding very well. I ride solo and not TOO aggressively. Others would probably find it hopelessly soft and spongy. Some like the OEM seats, most don't. Every brand of windscreen has its supporters and detractors. Same with most anything you can name.

I do think that most here would agree that sliders should be mounted if they haven't already been, just to protect your investment. My own preference in spending farkle money is for safety and comfort. Others like performance options. Another big thing to suck up endless Loonies and Toonies is electronics. That's why I think you should get familiar with what different folks are doing and why before you decide. This is a great place to do it. And check out the CFR thread (and here too). Great chance to meet some peeps on FJRs and see what they've done with theirs. Your neck of the woods, too.

Thanks guys. I'm not an overly aggressive rider, do a lot of touring, and go to Laconia each year, about a 1300km trip each way and I try to do it in one day. I would like to get some sliders for sure and upgrade the windshield. from there, well time and money will tell. Have a good day folks, 'eh'.

Are there any sliders that are 'no cut' and are reasonably priced for the 2003? Also looking at a CalSci medium windshield. Checked around on the net regarding different windshields and there doesn't seem to be huge differences from one to another, but CalSci appears to have a fairly good product. I will fiddle with the OEM suspension, as I rarely ride 2 up or with a load. Also looking at a Throttlemeister, any feedback on those? Next would probably be a seat and highway pegs, which at this point will I will be broke. Just wondering if anyone is using a Corbin 'Close' seat and again any opinions would be appreciated.

The no-cut sliders for Gen-I bikes are more expensive simply because there's more hardware, since they need the bracket to offset through the fairing slot.

There's nothing wrong with the sliders that require the hole in the fairing. It doesn't make your bike suddenly worthless to drill a hole in the plastic, and the sliders that mount directly are stronger, in my opinion. I know they're cheaper.

wfooshee, tks for the reply, I just wasn't sure how easy it would be to do and how easy it would be to mess up and drill in the wrong place. Any suggestions on brand of slider?

Here is a very recent thread on the drill vs. no-drill question. You need to learn about searching via Google. The format is "subject site:fjrforum.com" in the question window (or whatever they call it) in Google, and space exactly as shown. So it's "sliders site:fjrforum.com" or "seats site:fjrforum.com." Try different search terms to get more results. Got it?

To be more specific--and maybe helpful--I thought I'd expand some on this.

Safety--things like: lighting, reflective materials, horn upgrade, improvements on stock mirrors, more and better protective gear.

Comfort--the seat, windscreen, highway pegs, passenger floorboards, etc.

Performance--suspension, intake and exhaust mods, et al.

Electronics--GPS, sat radio, radar/lidar devices, intercom, fuse blocks, voltmeters, tire pressure monitoring gadgets.

And on and on and ON. There's really no end to it. Good luck.

Important to me for comfort is a Sargent Seat, Airhawk Air Pad, Wild Bill Highway Pegs, Cal Sci Windshield, and for safety/paint protection, a tank protector & R&G Sliders. There are grip puppies and throttlemeister and a Superbrace. To help power the electricals, the bike has a Eastern Beaver fuse block.

There are stacked two sets of risers to bring the bars up, back, and spread out 10 degrees from stock

Ok, from left to right:

FZ1 mirrors with MaxView Blind spot mirrors

Audiovox Cruise Control Pad

J&M CB radio with MP3 plugged in and weather radio and passenger intercom...J&M headset with two speakers

Zumo 550 GPS with bluetooth...talks directions and also can receive and make cell phone calls...speaker in left ear

black switches are three way for front and rear hyperwhites...run front ones solid all the time...leave the rear off

during PGR (Patriot Guard Riders) funeral escorts, click the switches to flashing and white leds act as strobes front and back

this is Stebel Air Horn on TOG (tip over guard) and Fiamm disc horns replacing stock horns
