It started today while on an EZ ride. First just a stumble while accelerating out of corners. Felt like a fuel problem. 57K miles on bike.

But with a half tank of fuel that didnt make sense.

I kept riding then the stumble came back. Between 3-6,000 RPM. Still felt like fuel.

Then the yellow CK engine light came on.

I pulled in the clutch and shut the engine off and coasted to a stop.

Let it set until the group returned to fetch me.

Tried to start it and it fired right up no yellow engine light.

I limped back to the main road.(rode EZ) Just before I got to the main road the bike dropped 2 cylinders and the yellow light came back on.

This time with a #33 fault code displayed.

Left the bike on the road and got a ride with MCRIDER007 (Thanks Steve)!

Got home and checked the Yamaha repair manual. Fault code 33 is ignition.

Got my truck and tie-downs and fetched the bike.

Thanks 'Kawpatty' for helping load a FJR with a half tank of fuel into my truck!

Checked the ignition power leads to the coil prior to loading the bike.

I was hopeing to find a loose lead coming off the ignition coil. Nope not going to be an EZ fix.

I started and moved the bike to load it. "When I started the bike it ran on all four cylinders for a moment then dropped two cylinders.

(The Yellow warning light and fault code stayed on.)

I'm hopeing its a ignition coil.

The bikes in the garage still tied into the truck.

I don't have a way to 'bench load test' the coil at the house.(That I know of)

I'm thinking I should take it to Desert Valley Powersports Tuesday (Home of FJR Goodies.com)

Trouble is I'm supposed to leave for a riding vacation in 10 days.

Suggestions??

Using Google fault code 33 site:fjrforum.com led me to the thread that's in the link. It has a list of all the codes.....

It took me longer to type this response than it did to look it up.....

Check all wire connections (hint: multi-pin connectors) before assuming it's hard parts. If not...it looks like you'll be late leaving on vacation. Sorry!

Thank you for the Link.

Hey I did some looking and code 33 is supposed to be an open circuit detected primary wire of the ignition coil

(#1,4)

Also it says to check, for an open or short circuit in the wiring harness, a malfunction in the ignition coil, malfunction in the ECU, or Malfunction in a component of ignition cutoff circuit system.

I'm still betting on a loose or corroded connector....

Number One rule in chasing electrical problems...try the easiest things first!

Good luck!

Thank you for the links!

Ya know, I just had the lower fairings off and had a time getting the R/H side back on.

I'll pull it again and, check the wire connections on the 'lower coil' tomorrow.

Which coil is the (1) and (4) coil? The upper or, lower?

Jim

I beliewe it is the one on the Right Side (Lower) with the Arrows...the same area where you had a hard time.

Hope this is it...

FOUND IT! I WILL make the Rally!

Power lead (orange) on 'LOWER' coil was loose creating a stumble and causing a 'Fault Code'. Removed lower r/h side of fairing this morning and found the problem. Squished the spade connecter to get a tighter fit and reinstalled it.

Test rides to follow!

I LOVE Riding my Yamaha to BMW Rally's!

Thank You ALL again for your support and help!

Jim

Great job. As one who also enjoys riding my FJR to BMW rally's, good you can go. I was in Bloomsburg a few weeks ago for the National BMW rally, it was a blast, hot as hell, but the people are great and you see some fantastic bikes.

Enjoy and glad you got it fixed.
