Not sure how many of you caught the first episode (I was camping at the Blue Ridge Mountains Motorcycle Campground and forgot to set my VCR) but luckily it came on again last night. The first episode all takes place within 200 miles of my house so I hatched a brilliant plant to sort of re-trace some of the route.

My wife and I are going to head out Saturday morning for breakfast at The Biscuit Place in Washington, GA and then take a scenic route through Baker Creek State Park, and then up to Toccoa Falls, GA to eat lunch at Shirley's Soul Food Cafe. From there the crew took Highway 11 up to the Hobo Hollar but we just rode that route last week so we'll probably find a different ride from there.

If anyone like to eat at out of the way places or wants to join us for some or all of the journey, let me know and we'll work out a meeting place.

Oh yea, it will be August 5th this Saturday.

Feasting on Asphalt Episode 1 summary

Pickled Pig's Foot? Not a chance.

I'll be doing the South Carolina/Savannah portion of the trip on another weekend. I'm heading to the Eastern Georgia portion to check out the Biscuit Place and Shirley's Soul Food Cafe. I want to get close to the mountains again as the weather is going to be miserably hot and humid...until the thunderstorms roll in. If I go to the mountains I'm sure to get rain. ;)

Well it was another 14 hour day of HEAT and HUMIDITY. The ride started out very nice with low 80 temps and we stayed on the highways all the way to Georgia. We wasted too much time at Hickory Knob State Park:

and ended up getting to the Biscuit Place too late after they closed. :dribble:

By now we were officially hot and hungry and had to take more Georgia backroads all the way up to Toccoa, Georgia. Once we got there we found Shirley's Soul Food Cafe and got to feast:

When we got there the place was empty but within 10 minutes it filled up. Here's just before some youth sports team arrived:

Fried pork chops, macaroni and cheese, fried okra, green beans, a biscuit (finally), and for dessert Peach Cobbler. The sweet tea was heavenly if not almost too sweet and Ms Shirley was very friendly and hospitable. The food was every bit as good as any Grandmother could make and was well worth the ride there. She said the "Feasting On Asphalt" has really done well for her business and lots of bikers have started showing up. We signed her guest book and ate until feeling sick. Then we had to put all of our gear back on and ride through the traffic lights back to the local motorcycle dealership so we could sit inside the air conditioning and talk about bikes until our food settled.

We left Toccoa, Georgia and rode to Walhala, SC and stopped for gas and found a service station with the best air conditioning I've felt so we loitered there for a half an hour to cool off, drink a Mountain Dew Slush and some ice water. We got back on Highway 11 "The Cherokee Foothills Scenic Parkway" and had a nice ride to a roadside creek just north of the highway 276 intersection where we had to get in the water and cool off. It was cool and refreshing and just what we needed to make it the rest of the way.

We hit some rain just west of Newberry and then rode into a pretty good thunderstorm after dark when we hit Columbia and rode the last 50 miles in some strong downpours in the dark. The FJR was once again stable, dependable and inspired confidence in the wet. Great bike.

We clocked 515 miles in 14 hours. We had a lot of stops in there and took a moderate pace and rarely climbed above posted limits. The rear Metzeler Z4 is squared off pretty good and will probably need replacement in another thousand miles or so but I've got a spare Z6 sitting in the garage waiting...

Nice ride report. Next time I'm at TWO, I'll have to take a side trip to Toccoa for some of Shirley's soul food.

Gary, it would be well worth your time and the trip there and back from Suches would be a nice day loop for you.
