As many of you know, I am a scuba instructor. I found it much easier for me to build my own first-aid kits for diving then buying a off the shelf first-aid kit with 212 pieces, which includes 150 band-aids. This is easy for me since I have a lot of experience and training in this area.

I would like to build a small compact first-aid kit for when I am on the bike. However, I not experience with long distance riding. What would you consider important items for a motorcycle first-aid kit?

I am considering two first-aid kits. The first one would be for everyday riding and maybe a single away form home. The second kit would be for multiple days away from home.

Thought?

Thank you,

John T.

Are you talkin bout tools for breakdowns or tools for sewing up yer knee when ya scrape it? Iffn it's tools.....bring a large hammer....those always come in handy.

www.hermosaworks.com They make a nifty motorcycle first aid kit, and if you read their ingredients, you'll get a good idea of what should be in it! After I found them, I just bought it! My wife is a nurse and I was going to build my own, but I don't think you can beat this one!

I think the big hammer might help with a knee scrape also. If you smash a finger hard your would forget about the knee scrape.

I have looked at a few of the pre-made first-aid kits. They always seem to have items I will not need. I do not need the monster scissors since I carry a leather man already. I am not sure about others, but I do not seem to get motion sickness while on my bike. However, I might add it to my kit if I am taking a trip to the coast and I might take a boat sight seeing.

I have yet to see a first-aid kit that includes Imodium AD or Carmex. These are little items I consider important for any extended trip. I also try to carry a Tylenol PM to help me get to sleep when traveling for scuba. I find myself in bed replaying the day’s events and having a hard time getting to sleep.

Aerostitch had some great items such as the sting wipes. Thanks for that link. The bit of duck tape was a good idea also for the first-aid kit.

Are there any items some you travel with just in case that might go well in a first aid kit?

I carry visine (I like to have my shield cracked open just about all the time & even with sunglasses on, my eyes get dried out on a multi-day trip) and USMC Vitamin M (as in Motrin; takes care of the aches and pains on a multi day trip). And earplugs for extended freeway stretches.

All above are good ideas, I would suggest you tailor the kit to yourself based on your needs for meds (Nsaids, epi kit, visine etc.). When you get into trauma supplies, the kit could get bulky quickly. Maybe a triangular bandage for a sling, some 4" kling bandaging with some sterile 4x4 dressings and some different shaped bandaids should take care of minor stuff.

We must have a nurse on the site some where. My brother was a nurse before he passed on (bike with sidecar 1989). He put me together a first aid kit I have always carried with me. Lots of Bedidine scrubs and gauge, some antiseptic and triangle bandages. Think road rash, you may need the kit for someone who does not use AGATT. I fell top of Sonora Pass several years ago and I have the only first aid kit out of 12 riders. IF you have room a small crushable ice pack is nice to have.

Bill in STockton.

TheAxeman - Thanks for the link. I am not sure why my search did not find it.

pickax - I agree I need to cater the kit to myself. My issue is I have not done LD riding in the past, so I had never had a need for things such as Visine.

extrememarine - Great idea, I had not thought about Visine.

FJRottie - Good idea. I have a CPR mask in my glove box right now.

bikeama - I like the idea of a ice pack. You mention out of 12 riders you were the only one with a first-aid kit. I wonder why more don't carry a first-aid kit. I wonder how many riders on average carry first-aid kits.

Thank you all,

If you have more input please add.

FYI - I was just talking with a fellow scuba instructor who happen to be a doctor who reminded me not to forget super glue. In a pinch it can be use to close a wound.

I hope you put together something you think will work & I "wish the curse of you never having to use it on yourself or anyone else ever"....on you....hope you don't mind  .....

Take a wander through the first aid aisle at your local drug store and see what looks as though it would belong in your compact kit. The obvious things that spring to mind are:

Band aids, in the sizes that you might actually use.

Tylenol and or Motrin

Benadryl (for allergies or as a sleeping pill)

Hospital type gloves (latex free is better for some people)

Gauze pads. Cloth tape for securing pads.

Alcohol gel, for washing hands. Super small bottles are available.

Extras of any prescription meds you take.

Antibiotic ointment (for road rash)

CPR mask. Mine fits on a key chain and is about 1.5" square and 0.5" deep.
