Hi, being a first time owner of a 2005 FJR 1300. What things should I be looking out for ?

Thanks, Dan. B)

The plastic pop screws holding the overlap of b and c panel, and that was my own fault. Other than that, I haven't had ANYTHING break. This bike is rock solid.

B) HeySkyway. How many miles did it have on it before the problem showed up.

Thanks, Dan

Rear shock. Not broken, but at 19K it's definitely shot.

Not to worry--I have that brand new Wilber waiting to be installed when it gets cold and rainy one weekend this fall.

I think the correct question should read: "OK guys, what's my first farkle"?

P.S> Congradulations!!!

You need to put some locktite on the screws that hold the keys in on the sidebags... Two little torx security screws under the handle...

if they loosen and fall out you will lose one of or both of your locks...

I lost one... cause I missed the post...

Smart man to inquire about quick repairs so as not to have trouble...

Enjoy your new toy M8

make sure all screws are tight, and that the set up people used locktite where called for. I have had 2 reflectors and one fairing screw fall out that I never touched. These are items not installed at factory by my knowledge and so %^&% here CA got his hands on my bike.

that said, it cost me all of $6 to replace everything

All these are very ligit especially the tires, start saving money now.

For me though the things I first had to worry about was ergonomics.

Seat replaced, vibrations in handlebar (right hand), removed main return spring and synch throttle bodies help greatly. Risers and new grips maybe near end of list but I didn't like the stock grips.

These were my pressing issues of making the bike more enjoyable.

Sliders to protect plastic was more just in case type thing and look cool.

PCIII may help some with hessitation/surging so ridability.

Other than that if you go over your bike and make sure everything is tight/lubed properly and maintain it you should have little problems.

WARNING!!!!!!!!!!!! Do not use Loctite on any screws that contact plastic, especially fairing screws. The Loctite will destroy the plastic.

I agree with you all the way, if you intend on taking those screws out again... I have no intention of ever taking those screws out... and I don't want them falling out..

I don't want to have to check to see if they are tight every 500 to 1000 miles... thats just silly....

JMO...

First thing that broke on mine was the water pump... started with a leak and eventually needed the impellor replaced as well as the seals... probably around 6000 miles. Shaft drive oil seal went next... about 7500 miles. Other than that, she's all good. Both were covered under warantee (which sucked, but that was the dealer's fault, not Yamaha or the bike).

YMMV... I'm a bit of freak and have no problem considering the FJR to be just a top-heavy dirt bike if the need is there. ;)

First for me was the valve guide at around 8k. But an actual first failure was the ign switch at 12k.

Valve still sounds the same at 15k.
