Just rolled over 2,300 miles on the 07 FJR. During my last two rides to the Hot Springs area (300+ miles round trip in a day) the area between my shoulder blades developed a very uncomfortable burning feeling. Bike suspension, seat and handlebars are bone stock. I am trying to ride loose with my weight carried in the hips, legs and lower back with little hand pressure on the grips. Put over 22,000 miles on a VTX 1800 with no discomfort other than a sore butt. Any similar experiences and solutions?

Risers. Failing that, a lower seat cushion. Failing that, a young, cute, Chinese masseuse chick to walk on your back after the ride. ;)

Damn. I have a parallel life! I have a new 07 FJR with 2300 miles on it. I have a VTX1800. And I too have some lower neck/upper back area soreness on day-long rides.

Let me know if the risers fixes your problems and maybe I'll try them too.

I had the same affliction - the risers did help, but for me (and YMMV, etc, etc, etc) the big fix was the throttle spring mod.

Once I flipped that middle spring off one revolution the shoulder blade pain (and the wrist numbness) were gone.

I typically do 500 to 750mi per day when on the road so getting this resolved with a 15 minute fix.

Thanks to the kind members on this board for their crystal clear directions. :clapping:

Throttle spring mod? That fixed your back/neck pain? I have not noticed that throttle tension is causing my problems (but maybe it is!). What's the link to the discussion?

When I moved from a cruiser to the FJR I had the same pain. It got fixed when I rode the bike with much less tension in the upper torso and no death grip. If I feel that pain it means I have reverted back to the older (correct for upright riding positions) riding style, and force myself to grip the bike more with the lower torso and relax my shoulders, arms and hands....once or twice it meant I was tensing up from riding past my comfort level that day, and it was a sign to slow down.

Just my thoughts/experience.

YMMV

You are riding in a different postion ,so you are using different neck and sholder muscles , these need some strenghtening and stretching.

Get a helment , tape on some extra weight ( like 1-2# sugar each side of your helment )wear it and move your head forward and backwards the side to side for 5-10 twice per day ( you could join a gym and pay big dollars ). Yes I know you will look stupid

Get a good neck sholder back and arms massage at least twice a week for two weeks , this will help a lot,

Try MASTER YODA position.

Next time you ride do 3-5 minutes streching exercises ( get the massage person to show you ) twice before you go out then at every stop.

Do not grip the throttle hard and make sure your hands are not angled downwards , give you hands a break several times in the ride.Stand up and down the pegs every 20-40 minutes . Move your feet about . If you stay in the one postion for more than 15-20 minutes when you stop your muscles will be a bit stiff as they have not moved ( you move about in you sleep for this very reason.

Risers may help, might not too. You have three sets of bolt holes under the stock bars and you are in the middle one if still stock. I found that it was the angle of the grip more than the distance that bothered me. You may like more of an angle, I like straight. Also, strain on that throttle has lots of effects. I have a brakeaway throttle lock. Just the ability to rest the right hand every once in a while has lots of benefits.

Risers are the answer. Make all the world of difference.
