Hello to all! My name is Martin. I just purchased a 2004 Cerulean Silver FJR w/ABS. I’ve only owned it a couple days and I LOVE it. I’m turning 46 this year and I felt like it was time to start riding something more comfortable. But I’m not ready for a Goldwing. Nothing against the touring king (my dad LOVED all his GW’s) but I’m just not there YET. My FJR was well loved by the previous owner mechanically but not as much cosmetically. Nothing I can’t tidy up tho. So far my only complaint (I knew going in) is the heat this Gen 1 puts on your legs. Anybody have any or know of any fixes for that? Just to make it a bit better. Anyhow, looking forward to being part of the FJR community. Thanks!

Welcome from metro Seattle and congrats on the new (to you) '04.

Certain GEN I's put out a lot of heat in the tank area. Search for heat fix and you'll find older threads addressing options. One is to put an insulation blanket on top of engine, similar to the 'jiffy pop' cover that started with '06. None are a perfect fix but do reduce it a bit.

Enjoy the new scoot!

Martin,

Welcome to the FJR sandbox! Pull up a seat, and relax.

There are separate (different) heat fixes for the Gen 1 on the left side, the right side, and the under-tank heat blanket. You should find these posts on one or more of the FJR forums, but I have a Gen 2, so I'm no help there. If you find old links that do not work now, ask around to find good copies, or try the Way-Back machine.

Tall strong boots help as well, and I recommend boots for any motorcycle riding anyway. I cheat, my boots have side-zippers which a shoemaker can add, if you can find a shoemaker lately.

Happy hunting!

Hey there Martin, Welcome. Congrats on your new ride. Any updates on the heat fix?

I felt a lot of heat blowing out between the frame and fairing on my 05. Alittle automotive weather stripping from Amazon helped and looks almost factory.

Depends on how many miles you are clocking. I used the damping sheet under the side cowlings and it limited the heat to some extent but the engine heating issue came up shortly as I used to ride a couple of hundred miles before putting it to rest then I have to remove it and buy long insulated long shoes and pants.

Looks great. Is it limiting the front airflow to the engine? Have you taken it to the long routes? Any heat related issues?

I ordered and received the reflectics from that eBay seller listed below. I haven’t had a chance to install it yet. I also intend to make the piece for the left side that a member posted a while back. I will update as I do each “fix.”

@d EVOlved 1 welcome to the Forum from So. Cal! Ride safe, and keep the shiny side up! I had an '03, and yes, it put out a lot of heat. You won't be able to completely eliminate it, but can improve on how much of it is hitting you. Weather stripping worked for me, and a heat resistant air-conditioning blanket (one side aluminum foil) on top of the engine (below the tank) helped a lot. (A similar shield is factory installed on my '06).

Didn't notice right away. Looks factory to me.
