Damn, Fred....you 'splained it SO well even I understood it.

But at 80K miles on my stockly suspended '04, it's so worn out, and I'm so used to it, I'll probably just continue riding 'til the forks fall off from wear. :D

 
I have access to a rear shock from a 2013. Would it be worth the time and trouble to put it into my '07?

What about the fork springs?

Short answer, absolutely yes. The '13's shock spring has a much higher spring rate and the damping was revised. The '13's fork spring rate is 1.0...... which is what many of us put in as aftermarket or close to it (Gen II was 0.85).
