Called the local dealer yesterday and talked to a woman in the service dept and asked if they knew about the FJR1300 switch recall. She replied "that's a kawasaki, right?". Ugh. Their policy is they don't order parts until they have the bike, then 5-7 days waiting for parts. Lose the bike for almost two weeks. Ridiculous.
Time for a new dealer! Yesterday I walked in to a dealers shop and they ordered the part, we will make the apointment to install when they get the part. I didn't even buy the bike from them. They really don't even know for sure if I own a FJR other than I bought a few oil filters and crush washers from them.

Some want your buisness and I guess some don't. Nothing comes cheap from this shop but they will work for you.

Has anyone gotten an "official" recall notice from Yamaha yet???

You really shouldn't have to wait if you bought it new from a Yamaha Dealership. There is a whole paragraph on page one of the Tech Bulletin telling the dealers to contact the owners they have sold too, plus there is a list of affected motorcycles invoiced to their dealership that was included with the bulletin. A dealership worth your biz would be smart to follow the instructions and give their customers a call. We have also told the first 3 we have scheduled that if they want to upgrade with HeliBars Tour Performance top clamp the install is free no matter where they buy the clamp. Yeah I know, ya have to take it off anyway but it's a great way to maybe have a happier customer down the road. I know it sure made some folks happy back when the Roadstars were getting the tranny redone. We installed many sets of High Compression pistons for free on that recall. Made no difference where the customer bought the piston kit, we just installed it for them.

I dropped by my dealer for something else yesterday and the parts guy asked if I was there for the recall. They had actually mentioned my name around the shop and wondered when I would be in. I told them I knew about it over a week ago, but I wasn't in a hurry and wanted to let them get notified and catch up. He has a couple "kits" on order and one is reserved for me.

I looked at the bulletin they had and it seemed to indicate the replacement was just the switch portion and they had made sure there were no cold solder joints. Does not sound like they are adding a relay or anything. Sounds like something to keep bugging them about changing for future FJRs.

Anyway... that is my $.02 worth on the topic.

Went to my West Palm Beach, FL Yamaha Dealer and told him I was there to order my New switch on the FRJ IS recall. He said he didn't know anything about it.

I pulled out a copy of the NHTSA defect notification campaign initiation letter. He then said "this is not a yamaha recall". I told him that the recall has been in

his computer for a least a couple of days now. He had this look of "who the hell is this guy telling me what's in my computer". He looked, and there it was.

The look on his face changed immediately! He actually got pissed at yamaha that the dealer didn't get a letter before a customer told him to look in the computer

for it. He quickly put it on order for me and said, We'll call you when it arrives. The look on his face was priceless!!

There is an ignition switch recall. I have ordered the parts through my dealer(part number 90891-30058-00). It is tech bulletin #M2009-002R. 2009 FJR1300AEC RP16Y-000275~000306

The notice is effective January 29, 2009 and reads:

Dear Yamaha Owner:

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Yamaha Motor Corporation, U.S.A. has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in all 2006 through 2008 and certain 2009 FJR1300A and AE model motorcycles. Our records show that you own the affected motorcycle shown above.

The reason for

this recall:

In affected motorcycles, the main ignition switch’s wire connection could overheat due to electrical resistance,

becoming hot enough to melt the solder connecting the wire to the main switch. The wire could come off the switch if the solder melts, preventing the electrical system from functioning. If this occurs while the motorcycle is being ridden, the engine would stall and be impossible to restart which could result in an accident with injury or death.

What Yamaha

and your dealer

will do:

To correct this defect, affected motorcycles must have the main switch replaced with a new one designed to prevent overheating. Your current key will still work in the new main switch. There will be no charge to you for this procedure. Replacing the main switch takes about 1 hour, but your dealer may need to keep your motorcycle longer depending upon their schedule.

What you should

do now:

Please call your Yamaha dealer to make a service appointment to have this procedure performed. Remember

to take this letter with you when you take in your motorcycle.

You should not ride your motorcycle until this modification is performed.

If you are unable to return to the Yamaha dealer who sold you the motorcycle, this service will be performed by any authorized Yamaha Motorcycle dealer. For the name of a dealer near you, call 1-800-88-YAMAHA or visit the Yamaha web site at: www.yamaha-motor.com.

Federal regulations require that any vehicle lessor receiving this recall notice must forward a copy of this notice to the lessee within 10 days.

Thanks Mike57 for sharing the whole letter.

We haven't gotten them yet out here in the hinterlands, but we're anxiously waiting.

If you browse around on the board here, you'll see that this has been a hot topic for the last few years, and that the FJRForum was instrumental in bringing about the recall.

Welcome to the Forum.

Does anyone know the affected serial numbers?

If I'm not the orginal owner, can I still get it fixed? I would assume so...

Exactly what my dealer did. They called me Friday to let me know of the recall and to tell me they've already ordered one and will call again when it arrives to schedule a time to get it done.

I've tried to follow this but don't think I've seen this addressed.I've seen members write that their dealer contacted them about the recall.

What if the dealer you purchased at is 900 miles away?

Should I expect a contact from D&H or should I go ahead and contact my local guy in KC?
I bought mine at D&H but I have it serviced at a local dealer who called me.
