I am missing the start of the IBR due to work, but will join the staff at the first checkpoint. Lisa has me working an assignment that may not be all that popular with a few riders, but someone has to do it.
Looking forward to following Matt and Dale's posts here.
Apparently I was gone too long and had to do another FNG post to get my posting ability back, but now that is done, so I should be able to send y'all a few updates from the staff caravan after CP#1.

The daily report is a great read. I must admit that before last week, I couldn't really understand the concept of L/D riding, let alone even fathom the idea of trying it. But this thread has been eye opening. I'm not ready for a serving of kool-aid just yet, but I would enjoy a ride to a checkpoint.

I followed the IB Rally thread in 2013. It got me started in LD riding. I have 12 IBA certificates so far and many more planned. Good luck to all the riders this year. I'll be following the daily reports and looking forward to the pictures and stories.

We will have a little fun today.... the First Rider Out The Gate (FROTG) Contest begins at 10am. Cletha and Eric V. are the Hair Dye Specialists who will give entrants their hair dye job.

General First Rider Out The Gate (FROTG) Rules:------------------------------------------------------------------------1) $2 to enter the contest - this is your hair dye fee. Sign up at the Tech Inspection table on Saturday.2) Contest begins on SUNDAY at 10am near the Tech Inspection table.3) Contestants must have finished their complete IBR Check In process *BEFORE* participating in the hair-dying exercise. 4) Entrants have no say as to color(s), placement or amount of dye used.The FROTG Team (Eric & Cletha) make this call.5) Hair Dye will be something like "Jerome Russell B Wild" hair dye - easily washable after the contest.6) Bald riders are still encouraged to enter the contest. We'll have special coloring methodology for you. Heh.7) As in 2013, the winner is chosen by their riding peers at the Sunday night banquet via a highly-tuned applause-o-meter. This will occur after dinner and immediately prior to getting down to business with rally packs.8) Winner must be on the Start Line Monday morning sporting their complete dye job. If a touch-up is need for photo opportunities, Eric & Cletha are happy to perform this task. 9) The FROTG Winner will be the first bike released Monday morning, followed by the remaining Top 10 FROTG contestants (the latter selected by the FROTG Team at the banquet).10) In the event of a tie - the "Don Moses Rule" takes effect: winner is determined by 3 hands of "Rock,Paper, Scissors".

Eric V. here, there are more Darkside FJRs in the parking lot than non. One of the Eric's is in need of intervention, at least in the form of a dark side ready brake arm. Not sure what the man was thinking?

Colin is indeed out. And man does it suck. A career change in the last year combined with a dodgy first couple of jobs has meant that I was not able to make the run this year.
After having run the rally twice and then spent a year+ looking forward to this years rally it was actually a tougher decision to drop out than when I first had to pony up the cash the first year I ran in 2011. And even now in the past 4-5 months since I officially dropped out I have been finding myself even more stressed at the fact that I had to drop out than I felt when I actually ran the event. (Go Figure!)
Anyways, to all the entrants Best Wishes, Stay Safe and Good Luck!

Wow, what a great thread! Thanks to Iggy, et. al. or all the great info and commentary. Just finished reading from Post #1 to the current end.
From a rider perspective, Iggy's note that the IBR is for the riders and that they don't know much about what's going on during the rally is exactly right. In my past two IBR runs (one successful, one stopped a leeeetle bit short) my full appreciation of my experience didn't happen until I was back home and reading the commentary on this and the IBR threads.
I find myself really missing the adrenalin of being a rider getting ready at the start. Much more so than I ever imagined.
So, I'm looking forward to reading along with the rest and rooting for all the riders to have a safe ride all the way to the finish, and . . . that a Mod 3 rider is at the podium when all is said and down!

PS: One comment regarding RiderX's statement "you are guaranteed good sleep at every checkpoint." My experiences were it was really difficult to close the laptop and turn out the lights and not keep tweaking my route plan so I could get to sleep. However, by then, sleep always came quickly.
