This is good stuff folks. At least I think it is. Our club took over an unused 1/4 mile cart track and promoted some flattrack races here in Ft Inn a few years back. We double sanctioned them with the AMA and AHRMA https://www.ahrma.org/ .

We had good racer and spectator turnouts, decent cheap concessions. Only being a 1/4 mile the serious racers were on converted M/X bikes. The vintage bikes were awsome. David Aldana's leathers https://magazine.cyclenews.com/i/145534-cycle-news-2013-issue-29-july-23/113 alone were worth the price of admission. The pits were full of fascinating stuff. The quad racing was something you had to see and HEAR-the sound of a couple Banshees on a bull ring-WOW. The flattrack format https://www.charlottehalfmile.com/race-day-schedule/ makes for a night of fast paced nonstop action.

I've never seen the pros on the big bikes on the 1/2 mile but I'm going to try my best to make this one. If it's as good as a small time event put on by local amateurs no body will be disappointed.

Back before Mt Saint Helen's blew I used to run down to Castle Rock WA and watch the nationals, even watch Kenny Roberts run there! Miss that Castor Oil smell.

Castor oil? Forgive my ignorance but where was the castor oil smell coming from? When I think Castor oil I think 2stroke premix. When I think 2strokes and dirttrack I think KR on the TZ750 based machine that he rode once and said he wouldn't ride again. Was he or anyone else running 2strokes? Did the 4strokes run castor oil in the crankcases? As I said I've not seen the big bikes on the big tracks. I know the bean oil smell from the kart tracks though. I used to pit for a friend that ran unlimited 2cycle karts. Methanol, nitromethane, polypropylene and bean oil. My eyes water just typing about the smell. Then there was the muratic acid used to etch the smeared piston material off the cylinder walls after a leanout and the tire softener. Ahh... the smells of racing. Now that I pay more attention to stuff like the MSDSs on chemicals I'm glad I didn't hang around the kart tracks all that much.

I bet it was something to watch KR race.

I don't really know why they mixed it with the fuel they ran mostly Harley with a few Triumphs in the mix, had to ask what that smell was.

This 4 stroke oil will give you that smell. I run it in my vintage Triumph Cub trials bike.

That explains it!

PRODUCT INFORMATION

Silkolene 4T Castorene R40S Oil

A castor and ester synthetic blend for special racing applications

This blended combination enhances the natural high film strength of castor while reducing normal oil thickening and lacquer build-up

Can be mixed with methanol fuels

Must not be mixed with other oils

Top choice of many Dirt Track Race Teams, the life blood of an XR750

R40S (SAE 40 wt.)

The same oil can be mixed with methanol or used in the crankcase. Either way a good whiff makes you want to go to the concession stand (smells like a peanut oil deep fryer).

Thanks, but count me out on this one. If the weather's good, I may hit the Florida Tech Day -- but only long enough to shake hands and drink a quart of water.

The "Hooligan Class" of HD Sportsters running on the 1/2 mile at Sturgis was the best race of the day.

Apparently any engine is OK but you have to run a stock sportster frame.

Here are some pictures from Del Mar in California

https://www.hotbikeweb.com/iv-league-del-mar-flat-track-races

The "Hooligan" class was for street legal Harley-Davison motorcycles that consisted of mostly Sportsters with a Dyna or two thrown in for good measure. The entries and involvement in this class has grown by leaps and bounds in just a short time thanks to the spearheading of Mark from Rusty Butcher along with Aaron and Shaun of Suicide Machine Company . Companies such as The Speed Merchant, Lyndall Brakes, San Diego Customs, Roland Sands Design and Burly Brand are also helping to make a push for this exciting movement. The racing in the "Hooligan" class was wild and jam packed with action with multiple restarts due to first lap crashes. Mark from Rusty Butcher not only makes some bad ass leather goods but is fast as hell on a motorcycle and is usually at the sharp end of the field for these races. This night was no exception with him being the fastest on his Butcher Flat Track bike. He had a guest rider in the form of Buddy Suttle of Unknown Industries riding the Butcher Jump Bike that has been seen in the wildly popular video series " Tracker Tuesday" that Rusty Butcher produces. Buddy obviously can ride a bike and was 2nd right behind Mark on this night. Our Hot Bike online Editor Ed Subias even got in the action on his beater Sporty and ended up the night in 3rd place. Hot Bike not only brings you the action, we're in the action too!
