On Friday, Oct 1st, Everett(rockmurf) and myself loaded up and hit the road for Dahlonega, GA. We departed without issue from Riverview, FL around 6:30am and arrived into Dahlonega around 2:30pm if memory serves me right. We only stopped twice for gas on the way up which is pretty good for being my first long distance trip.

We checked into the hotel and then grabbed a bite to eat in town and called it a day.

Saturday morning we got an early start and headed out on a route I had planned which included Hwy 60 up to Suches then over Wolf Pen Gap road, down 19 to Hwy 75 and up and over the Richard B Russel Hwy. We then headed north to Owl Town Rd and after a couple of wrong turns ended up on the north end of Hwy 60 in Morganton and then back south to Suches. We were looking for a place to have lunch and the GPS led us to 2 places that were closed. So after some searching we ended up going back over Wolf Pen Gap Road to Blairsville and had some of the best BBQ I have ever had at Jim's Smoking "Q" which is located in the gas station on the corner of Booger Hollow Rd and Hwy 19. If you are in the area I would highly recommend giving Jim and his family a visit. Great people and great food.

After lunch we went back over the Richard B Russel Highway and meandered our way back toward Dahlonega by taking some backroads. Everett will insist we were on a couple of goat trails but I still say if it's paved it's a road!! After some "adventure" riding we made our way into town and decided to try one more area. We pickup up Hwy 9 south of Dahlonega and followed that to Little Mountain Road where we hit a dead end. We backtracked to a church and turned left and ended up on the craziest 1 lane backwoods, hillbilly, we will eat you if you stop, road I have ever ridden in my life. I was waiting for the scene from "wrong turn" to play out with some canabalistic family eating us alive. We weaved and turned and back and back we went for miles and miles. The road got narrower and the sides of the road were litterally cut into the ground so there were huge embankments surrounding you almost like it was a creek bed that had been paved over. After a good 30 minutes or so we finally made it to a stop sign. This took us to Hwy 52 and back into town.

Sunday morning we packed up and headed north to our new hotel in Robbinsville, NC. Instead of taking 19/29 I plotted out a half ass backroads route the night before. We took 60 north to Suches, GA and then Wolf Pen Gap road over to 19/29. Might as well have some fun right??!! Just south of Blairsville we picked up Town Creed School Rd over to Trackrock Gap rd and followed that north into NC. This proved to be an excellent choice. The road was great and there was no traffic. We jogged over to Hwy 66 and Old Hwy 64 which took us up to 19/29 near Murphy NC. We stopped by the Microtel and dropped our side cases off. It was too early to check in so might as well do some riding. We hopped on Hwy 143 east and picked up Hwy 28. This is the portion east of Hwy 74 that alot of folks don't ride. But in my opinion, this is probably one of the best roads in the Deals Gap area and much better than the Hellbender 28 portion. We followed 28 over the mountains and through the woods.....to Franklin, NC. From there we headed south to Wayah Rd and took that back toward Andrews, NC. This is another great road alot of folks don't ride. There was some gravel in the corners but it was well worth the trip. After we finished up there it was only 2pm so we decided to hit the Dragon and get it out of the way. The weather was decent but overcast and a little cool. When we got to the Dam the road was a bit wet so we took it pretty easy heading north on the Dragon. At the end we stopped for a quick picture and just in time for it to start drizzling. We turned the bikes around and did the Dragon in the other direction. By this point I had my bearings and picked up the speed a bit. We stopped at the big Deals Gap store so I could get a shirt and a couple new stickers then off to the Hotel we went.

What is it with Robbinsville and the lack of eateries? We tried a couple of different places which were all closed and ended up at the Ingles Grocery store. A quick stop at the Deli to assess the Fried Chicken situation and the highly under educated gentleman behind the counter must not have understood Everett.

Everett: "Is this chicken fresh"

Moron: "Uhh, yes sir, we cook it fresh daily"

Everett: "So how long ago was it cooked"

Moron: "????......."

Needless to say, we decided on Mcdonalds.

Monday morning we got a later start due to the weather. It was in the high 30's when we woke up and the Cherohalah would have to wait. We rolled out around 10am if I remember correctly and hit the top when it was 39 degrees!! BRRRRR. I had a massive headache at this point which Everett was greatful for because he said it slowed me down and I wasn't as much of an ass!! Nothing but sympathy from that guy. We motored down into Tellico Plains and made a quick stop at the gas station just before Hwy 68. We met a few fellow Floridians from Jacksonville, FL and I took a handful of tylenol. Off we went to Hwy 68 south which is a sweet road with some really nice high speed sweepers and "s" curves. We hung a left a Hiwassee?? Dam road and stopped to take a few pictures of that. By this point my head was pounding and I was ready to just get back to the hotel. We continued east on this road into some very pretty country and what turned out to be John Brown or Jim Brown Highway. This brought us into Murphy, NC where we hopped on 19 / 29 back into Robbinsville. We stopped by the gas station and got some "broasted" chicken which was fantastic. I took a hard nap and we were done for the day.

We woke up this morning around 6:30am and had breakfast and checked the weather. Forecast we looking good but it was damn cold out. We mounted the saddles around 8am I believe and the temp read 36 degrees!!! F'in coooolllldddd. Especially for us Florida boys. I froze my balls off and I mean literally. They froze off and I found them in my boots. It did not hit 40 degrees for a solid 80 miles but I tucked in behind the windshield and we managed to get through Atlanta and do 210 miles before stopping. At that point I realized my camelback had sprung a leak in my tank bank and my crotch (minus my balls) were soaking wet. So we stopped at Wendy's for lunch and I changed my drawers. But the leather pants were still wet so it didn't matter much. Luckily the weather was in the mid 60's and sunny at this point. We stopped one more time for gas and did the entire 630 mile trip home with only 2 stops.

This was my first long distance trip and I had a blast. This was my 2nd trip to the Deals Gap area but first trip to North Georgia. I'm hoping to do it again in the spring or at least next September.

5 days, with 2 days of travel which was essentially 3 riding days.

Total Mileage: 1819
