I'm not an avid fly-fisherman by any means but in KY and TN they stock area streams with small trout that are a lot of fun to try to catch just walking up and down the rocks of the streams after parking the bike. I had a great time down in Tellico Plains on the Tellico River off the Cherohala Skyway near Bald River Falls. We had rented a cabin in Tellico Plains. Just fished in my sneakers and caught enough for our dinner. A large ziplock bag worked well to put the fish in for transport.

Again, I wouldn't call it all-out fly-fishing, but was a great memory and something I'd like to do again. Great blend of two hobbies.

Lately I've been looking at something like this , the Cabela's Stowaway 6 piece, 8'6", 5 wt. Linked is the low end reel option Prestige Plus. It looks like they have Prestige Premier and RLS version too. Cost range is ! $220 - $275.

Avid fly fisherman (and deep sea ...tuna, yellowtail, dorado, marlin, etc); I've often thought about taking my 10' rod ... strapping it to the bike and off to the Sierras; however, have decided that if you want to ride --RIDE --- if you want to fish -- FISH --- and do it right.

I like to have a full complement of gear .... depending on my activity, and for fly fishing / camping, I can hardly get all the gear in my SUV. Typically, I camp at Big Pine, CA (8,500'), in the water at 7 AM --- catch and release about 25 trout and keep 5 for the barbi.... fun stuff..... catch the video!

+1 on the Cabela's stowaway..........I think the 3 weight is the best trout rod...I've cast the 3,4,and 5.......the 3 really casts like a 4 wt....at least the way I cast a line.......I just got an ES on Thursday and loaded my fishing stuff on it earlier this evening..........the stoway will fit in a saddle bag....and the waders and shoes....take enough junk out of your vest and that fits in there too.....I have a topbox so my jacket pants and boots fit in there when I change out....ain't ideal, usually take a truck if just fishin', but it works...........have fun......take a lesson or two............ff

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm Me, Howie, and, zilla got our ***** handed to us for excessive punctuation.

I guess we should know better as we have a lot of posts as it's apparent 13 posts is the new "highly esteemed, established member status" ..

Who's opinions and posts are far an away superior to those who actually contribute info.........................

Without excessive punctuation..

The bride and I are both enjoy flyfishing, but two up riding just does not allow much in the way of extras. I have an L L Bean

5 wt 8 piece rod that would pack fine if I was riding alone. We took a ride across Canada up to Hyder down through Wa, Oregon,Idaho

Yellowstone, and back last summer. Broke our hearts not to fish some of the beautiful water we past, but you can,t do everything.

We have had a lot do discussions about what is the best way to ride , pull a trailer so you can bring more stuff, have friends with a vehicle come along, send stuff ahead to known stops. The ideal way would probably be to have an inexhaustible supply of money

And use outfitters who supply all the gear .

To each his own.

Good luck and have fun

At least your posting YOUR horse **** in the same thread as the newbie in this case. You got your pee pee slapped because instead of dog piling the newbie in a NEPRT thread, you were doing it in an unrelated thread. That's uncool.

Mr. Newbie 13 post. Stop this crap and use punctuation at least like a 5th grader. It's very annoying and you won't make it to 20 posts if you don't.

Hmmmmmmm, except, when I (me) started that, it was only excessive punctuation like was already going on in other non-NEPRT threads. I wasn't even off topic, but I answered what seemed to be a funny question with my lame attempt at a funny answer in a thread that SHOULD have been moved to NEPRT long ago, as it has been hashed out here since at least 2007. My mistake, I had my head up my *** and was thinking that thread was already NEPRT due to its content. That was why I picked it. Oops! What's seriously funny is that an admin went in there and cleaned it up in 5 minutes, while another spent half the morning sending out warnings and advisories, and answering PMs.

So it seems sending out warnings isn't to save time and trouble. Its about putting those of us who dare cross the delicate line of what an admin arbitrarily thinks is proper, in our place. A good reminder of just exaxtly who makes the rules and who will be obeyed, cuz those people can't boss anyone around at home, so they will do it here. Its like Lord of the Flies on the internet with a "record of our transgressions" cuz we have never gone out of our way to helpful to this place in some way. Thanks for the education.

Oh, and on topic, lest I garner another well thought out warning: Fly fishing from your bike will be sort of like rifle or bow hinting from your bike. It CAN be done, will be sort of a PITA, especially if you're 2 up. However, other people have done stuff that was previously labeled impossible, so until you give it a serious shake, maybe no one will. Let us know.

I've been fly fishing for years off the back of my 04 FJR. Last summer I fished in Montana and Idaho, starting out from my home in the WIllamette Valley of Oregon. My buddy was on a WIng. Everything I needed fit nicely on the bike. I have a GIvi top case which holds a ton of stuff. We hit the Salmon River, the Bitteroot, the Locsa, and the Jefferson Fork, all in a week of fishing. We even had waders which were hardly ever used. Excellent bank fishing off roadside pullovers were abundant and productive.

I find using the bike even for day fishing trips into the Cascades is a great way to travel. Saves a ton of gas. too. Here's my buddy in front of my bike. Notice my 4-pc rod bungeed to the top case frame. Worked fine!

I've combined them, and it's actually a pain in the *** (not to rain on a parade here). I live in the epicenter of flyfishing country, a nice easy ride to blue-ribbon waters in Idaho, Montana and Wyoming. While the pack rod and fly gear are easy enough to use, the issue is parking the bike, changing out of riding gear into fishing gear (which here means waders as the water is frigid year-round--hence the great trout fishing).
Waders take up a LOT of space. Now you've got ALL your riding gear to secure (boots to helmet and in between). So you hike off down the river and hope someone doesn't come along and screw with your stuff.

If you don't need the waders, and can just throw on Tevas and hop in, better situation. My solution: meet up w/someone that has a boat with all your fishing **** pre-loaded. Now THAT is a fun time...

Oh, and Oregon is the epicenter, not WA! [just kidding!]

SOme waders do take up a lot of space. I have a pair of lightweight Dan Bailey's which fit into a very small trravel bag they come with. They fit me great and I've yet to tear them .

So I'm on the bike for work in East Massachusetts, so I'm heading off to the Catskills today to maybe get some fly casting lessons. If anyone has a recommendation on instructors please let me know.

Popeil Pocket Fisherman and a deflated inner tube. Takes up very little space on the road since you were carrying a small compressor anyway.

Make sure the butt of your 'stich is still waterproof and you're good to go !
