All I can say is that when I made it through that 5 miles, I'd bee a heck of a lot better than I am today. In other words...way over my skill level.
Ya, those guys are pretty good and certainly having fun. They're in pretty good shape as well. That riding was done in Utah. Fun to watch.

You met Zac at Roseville Yamaha - he has some really fun video of singletrack he does when he's practicing for races

Accuweather is calling for 32 degrees at night in Truckee. ( Nearest city ? )

WeatherUnderground is predicting showers and 21 degrees !!!

You whimps better bring your thermal pantyhose !! :p :D

WOW, shocking to me as it is very pleasant here lately. .........perhaps that rain will hit before our riding? that would be awesome to settle the dust a bit. Truckee is always colder, but yes, it is one of the closest towns. Checking Downieville and the variance between there and Truckee *might* be another guestimate on what we can expect.

I was not able to locate my detailed CA off-road map ....does anyone have a source for a descent map of this area?

I'm leaning toward trailiering in the DRZ and bringing lots of gas as well as some basic camping stuff.

I'd use Norden, CA (Donner Summit)** as the weather reference spot. A couple days ago, it was looking like 38 or so as a low and clear -- may have to check again. Bigger problems than that for me and Judy right now with spending the night, however. Starting to look like I may end up meeting at the meeting spot Sat. morning for the day's ride and not much more.

**I lived in Tahoe for a lot of years and worked in Truckee a fair amount. Truckee is really in a basin, and it tends to get lower lows as a result. Tahoe is a basin, as well, but the lake is so large that it acts as a heat sink moderating temperature. Truckee, OTOH, wil have higher highs than the Tahoe Basin and gets some lows that occasionally are the lowest in the country (though not if it's a particularly cold snap somewhere in the Rockies). Norden should be a lot more accurate indicator of what we'll see, and it's showing 36 to 38 as lows for those nights on accuweatehr and weather.com.

I was able to find weather pretty close by in Soda Springs which is about 1200 feet lower than where we'll be accoriding to the topographical maps.

Yep, Friday and Saturday look to be the coolest days but I doubt we'll go much below freezing. Anytime we head to the mountains nearing a change in season, it's best to be prepared for pretty much any kind of weather. If the Donners had dual sports, RVs, propane stoves and what not, they wouldn't have had such a hard time

This IS the "big weekend"! I know that TWN and Highlander are on the road because Dave is stopping to visit this morning and Tim will stop by this afternoon. I wish I were able to join you guys.

:yahoo: Have a great time! :yahoo: I'll be waiting for the pictures to be posted.....

Dress warmly and bring the "cold" sleeping bags!

More of what Mike says.

Hope you all have the most wonderful weekend, stay safe and have lots of fun. Then post the pictures, or at least those one that are acceptable to the moderators! :)

What are you implying Jill?

Uhm...Jill....do you realize that some of the wives are going along? My guess is that they will probably reign in some of the more outlandish behavior. For instance, there will probably not be "naked tug of war" or pictures of the game. :dribble: I'm surmising there will be no "lookee how far I can ride my bike into the lake without stalling and falling over", either.

So, common sense will reign. There will be no photos labeled 'Hey, watch this' or 'Betcha haven't seen THIS done on a bike before'. Those are usually the best ones to laugh at, once the demonstrater has sobered up.

At my last count (having been on the phone with Andrew), the ladies present should be:

JoyfulGirl (Mrs. O'valeFJR- Sherri)

Mrs. Bluestreek (Cyndi)

Mrs. Uberkul (Kristi)

exskibum's S.O. (Judy)

While boys will be boys, a little common sense and forethought before attempted shenanigans might help keep anyone from being terribly injured. At least one can only hope there aren't any "Hey, you're not going to believe this!" moments. Trust me, the recovery just isn't worth it.....

Anxiously awaiting pictures of the fun and perhaps the "frost" as their temps were forecast to be in the low-mid 30's overnight.

Orangevale called me from the campfir tonight. They're having a rousing good time (I could hear the revelry in the background). They just wanted me to know they all wished I was there....that's okay, I'd rather be with them but for my "paying" for my own stupidity.

He said they'd done a little riding oday but were spending more time hanging around the camp and visiting. Hmmmmm, FJR owners acting all social? Imagine that! Oh, nevermind........... the wife-units are there without wheels.

Well, if I'd known that I could have driven up to the campsite and acted all social too. :)

Sounds like they're all having fun.
