Sorry to be slow in responding, its been really busy the last week or so (a good thing) Check out this thread from another web site https://www.twtex.com/forums/showthread.php?t=47278 I dont know any of these people but the time frame fits mine and I want to go out there and ride the new KTM. I've been out there many times, but always Jeeping or on a road bike. Dont know what the pace will be like, but you never do when on the first rides with new friends. I was just hoping to ride all those good jeeping roads out there like"Black Bear" "Imogene" "Engineer Pass" maybe some of the stuff up towards Grand Junction. For sure all "Off Road" stuff and if some single track technical stuff comes along that would really be icing on the cake.

Some of these guys are camping some staying in the hotel https://timberridgelodgeouray.net/ I'm a hotel guy. There cominhg together to ride Sunday through Wednesday. I will get out there on a Friday evening (27th) ride Saturday through Friday, head back home on the next Saturday (4th).

I'm up for any kind of ridng anybody wants to do, and that SouthWest Colorado area has plenty of it.
Whaddyathink...will a BMW GS 1200 Adv. be too big-a-bike for this one? The area I've 4-wheeled up there was Cinnamon pass and tooled around American Basin and that wouldn't be a problem. I would just hate to be a boat anchor for everyone else if it came to real technical riding...opinions are welcome.
You are certainly welcome to ride along with me. I don't plan on doing any gnarly single track technical riding; just easy stuff!

Do you have room at your Casa for a Jeep with attached M/C trailer? Trying to keep my GS knobbies primo for Copper Canyon!

Wow Don, you want to save a $150 set of moto tires? So how much rubber you think you're burning off those Jeep tires hauling the Beemer around? :D

I never heard of a GS trailer queen before! ;)

I never heard of a GS trailer queen before! ;)
Our GS's have been threatened with a trailer ride, but it hasn't actually happened yet. Can carry a lot more gear, and also bring the lighter dual sport bikes, in the back of the truck.

Then again, Aerostich has a sticker for this. It reads something like 'If this bike is being trailered, it has been stolen'.

Don, I wouldn't even try saving those tires. Don't worry they will make more :) . At 2.5k my rear TKC is pretty worn and my front D606 is starting to wear in weird places. Now if I could just figure out a way to ride in the dirt all the way to work and back, I would be set!

By the way, the Big "O" Gurl is sporting a high front fender now. She's looking real sexy showing off that rubber  .

For you? I got room AND security. You're more than welcome to park it here and if you need the spare room is available. I'd really like to do this ride, I just didn't want to hold people up if they're doing really technical stuff. I'm also going to have to get some knobbies for it though, any suggestions?

The ride from here to there isn't but two and a half or three hours and if you want, we can take dirt MOST of the way. We'd go up NM522 into Colorado for 7 miles and hang a left on Ave. G (I think) to Antonito. From there CO 17 will take us to another mountain road comming out just south of South Fork. From South Fork it's another hour I think.

Let me know, I'll plan on making this one, it sounds fun!

I think the GS would be fine on most of the roads metioned, it really depends on the rider, I guess. I've never had a problem riding by myself on technical stuff or anywhere for that matter. So I'm apt to take off, if something looks interesting.

Just to clarify, If its just two of us, I wouldnt take off and leave someone, but if its a group and I'm the only one wanting to take a little side trail or something, I'll take off and wouldnt expect anyone to wait around.

I would think in that part of Colorado (for the most part) its not so much options of technical vs non-technical trails as it is the pace of different riders, and thats a lot easier to manage.

fjrrider, thanks, that's pretty much what I'm looking for. I'm new to the dual sport thing and my dirt riding experience is...uh...pretty limited, specially of late. I'm planning a summer of it so hopefully I'll be up to speed by August. What do you guys think about knobbies? I've seen several tires that are "dual sport knobbies" that don't seem to be as agressive...are they still decent in the dirt or should I look for something more dedicated and just limit their use on the highway. I'm planning on getting another set of Metzler Tourance's for street riding and swapping 'em out back-n-forth. Opinions welcome.

Silver Penguin, if you happen to see that sticker I'll pay ya for it...I like that one!

So about a month ago my JC Wittney $50 Cheapo Top Case fell off while riding in the Talladega National Forest. In fact it almost took out the poor rider that was behind me. :dribble:

I decided this time I would splurge and buy a better quality Shad SH-40 Top Case. I have owned the Shad for less than a month and look at this:

sh-40crack2.jpg

As you can see there's a big crack along the seam! :angry2:

Unfortunately I found this out today on my way to work riding on one of the "Closed" roads being built near me. The latch decided to open as I was landing from a jump and then all my crap came flying out. To top it off, it was right in front of a construction worker driving one of those big graders. When in the heck did these people start working on Saturdays anyway? :D

No more top cases! Time to buy a good luggage rack and a soft tail bag.

How about a medium sized Pelican case back there? I have a large one for travelling with a rifle and that damn thing could be used as a speed bump w/o damage (not going to test it...just sayin...) I'm planning on getting one for my camera since they are air tight, water tight, and pretty much indestructible...they ARE a little pricey, but buy one it lasts forever...just a thought. Oh, they are now selling them in different colors too...I found a silver one to match my BMW GS1200 A...

Thanks for the advice! The first trunk I used was this one: JC Whitney The trunk itself was fine but the mount was real loose, which I believe lead to its final deployment. But it did last for over a year even though it rattled and shaked the whole time.

I really do like the Pelican case. The only negative is that it's real wide and not all that tall. I also believe it would be hard to fit a 12 pack of beer soda in there.

I'm thinking of going with this rack Black Dog and bag: Motofizz or just say the heck with it and go with the KTM's Trunk

Also I just ordered this Camelbak Military Mule. I already own a Military type Camelbak which I been mainly using for my MSF classes. However thanks to a recent article in the MCN rag, it gave me the idea to buy one with some storage (the MULE has 500 cu inch of space). My plan is to store my first aid kit in it. Also here's some advice... it's a little more but if you every buy a Camelbak make sure it's the Military version. The military version includes the insulated tube, shutoff and quick hose disconnects for easy cleaning.

Chris_D, check out these cases. The one's I'm looking at are the 1520, the 1550, and the iM2450. They are 7.41", 8.12", and 9" deep respectively...I'd say that's plenty for a 6 pack of beer...er...soda.

Not sure what Pelican case he using here, but I been eyeing this setup Caribou Cases
I like that one...Also like their 35L top case...that one uses the Pelican 1550...It looks like they use different manufacturers as well. I saw one one here that uses a Hardigg case...also great cases. I think YOU found ME the one I'm getting. Thanks, I owe ya a beer...two beers if you get it FOR me! :drinks:

I use a MOTOFIZZ large bag on the FJR for long trips. I just bought a mule on sale that 'zilla found on-line. It is as described -- a bit big but I'll try anyyhing once. Do you run a little vinegar through the tubing to clean it, then flush well?

I'm glad I could help! B) I won't be able to buy you the Hardigg case but I do have a nice Shad case at a discount

VINEGAR??? Add 10% by volume of Herradura Especial Tequila and the tubing on your MOTOFIZZ will be as clean as a whistle and your outlook on life will be superbly enhanced!

How do you like the Motofizz bag?

Was it the Military version MULE? How much did you pay? I paid $97 shipped to the door.

As for cleaning All I been doing is just rinsing it out real good and then hanging it upside down to let it air dry. If you do leave any liquid in there it will get nasty real quick. I also purchased Camebak's Elixir to try in the MULE. It will be the first time I have used something other than water in a Camelbak.
