I’d like to plug a TV project that I’ve been involved in over the last year. “The Woodsmith Shop” is beginning to roll out on public television stations around the country in the coming weeks. It’s a woodworking show that focuses on techniques, rather than projects. While Norm may build an entire armoire in 26 minutes on New Yankee Workshop, our show takes a tighter focus on techniques. So instead of showing how to build the entire armoire, we’ll show you exactly how to make mortise and tenon joints.

The show is a collaboration between Woodsmith magazine (my employer) and Iowa Public Television. I helped write, produce and even do some on-camera work in most of the 13 episodes.

The show began airing in Iowa in October and has been getting terrific comments from viewers. Among the stations that have committed to carrying it are:

K32CA Battle Mountain, NV Dec. 8 Sat. 8:30 am

KET2 Kentucky Dec. 11 Tues 2:30 pm

WCNY-2 Syracuse, NY Dec. 13 Thurs. 3:00 pm

KACV Amarillo, TX Dec. 15 Sat 1:00 pm

WLPB Louisiana (except NO) Dec. 15 Sat. 10:00 am

KWBU Waco, TX Dec. 15 Sat. 5:30 pm

WTV1 Charlotte, NC Jan. 5 Sat. 1:00 am

WFWA Ft. Wayne, IN Jan. 5 Sat. 8:00 am

KVIE2 Sacramento, CA Jan. 5 Sat. 2:30 pm

KUSF Tampa, FL Jan. 5 Sat.

GPB Georgia Jan. 6 Sun 12 pm

WGBY Springfield, MA Jan.?

WGTE Toledo, OH Jan.?

WKNO Memphis, TN Jan.?

KVCR San Bernardino, CA April ?

Visit our web site WoodsmithShop.com for the latest listings. I'd be interested to hear comments good and bad. PM them if you wish.

Sorry, I couldn’t figure out a way to work the FJR into a scene.

Craig

Sounds like a good show. I used to get the magazine for years, but let it lapse - always good projects and sources. Thanks.

Good stuff, look forward to it making our shores. I think I have watched every NYW

So how many woodies on here? I get told off for starting too many threads not FJR related...but anyone care to post pics of their creations. I play at it but I'm not much good. I enjoy it though.....when I get time.

My FJR is currently residing in the wood shop. I think that makes it a valid post.

Used to subscribe to Woodsmith. Always enjoyed it. Too bad none of the stations listed are in my cable programming. Speaking of which, this reminds me to go do the maintenance on my woodworking tools. This coastal environment loves to eat away at sharp edges for some reason.

I consider myself a woodworker, although so far the tools are many and the completed projects are few. :( I like the premise of the show, hopefully you will cover some basics like buying/selecting wood etc.

I am a current subscriber to Woodsmith and do a lot of projects. I like watching all the shows they give me good ideas for projects. Hopefully it will get in the local PBS in Seattle or Tacoma.

I have a very dear friend who is retired and does extensive woodworking in his hobby shop behind his house. I visited him last Saturday, took a piece of my personal furniture to him to modify for me. His name is Don, he is an avid Harley dude, some may remember I posted a pic of his custom bike a bit over a year ago.......see below:

Anyway, Don just built a one of a kind custom Hoosier made from solid Cedar from trees located on his property. The detail is just absolutely remarkable and I can not imagine the hours he has invested in this work of art. I would love to own it but I have no where I can put it. The exterior is finished but the interior is not and the cedar aroma is massive. If by some slim chance anyone may possibly be interested in purchasing it, send be a pm and I will put you in contact with him. He will gladly send you some photos.......his price is $1100.00 and trust me that is one hell of a bargain. I know this prolly should go on the classified thread, but I really don't expect to get much of a response, I just saw this thread and thought I would make mention of it.

This isn't my creation but click here and scroll down to the Sept 7, 2005 entry.

If there's enough demand, perhaps we could put together a group buy. I could do the fabrication ;)

On a more serious note, here's a project that ties together my biking and woodworking. I built the cabinet on the left to hold my gear.

The full-width drawer has shop-made wooden slides (just because I wanted to try it).

OK, who's next? Feejer222? Don't be shy now.

Nice job, I like the pockets at the top for gloves. Very neat, the drawers look good too. A project I have considered myself. Sooooooo satisfying every time you walk past it eh?

I am fortunate in that my business replaces wooden windows with UPVC. We often take out good timber, quite often mahogany. We took out a pine shop front a couple of years ago and I have 2 10 foot lengths of timber 10'' x 3'' just waiting for me to find time to make something. It was the original shop front and must be 60 years old.

A display cabinet I did as a birthday present for my brother-in-law made from re-claimed mahogany.

I bought the timber for this table, it is miranti (far eastern mahogany). It was a wedding present for my brother.

Been a woodworker for close to 30 years, primarily cabinets, e-centers, and furniture. Not my day job, but I get a nice mix of client commisions, some work for architects and/or builders, and if I'm really lucky, something for us ...

No CNC for me; all my dovetails are cut with a handsaw, chisel and mallet...
