here is an interesting report from the ST owners forum on one of their own who went "to the Dark Side" and bought an FJR and is very happy with it.

Good comments from other ST owners. Seems a lot of them think all FJR's "tick".

He did say the battery was in the right fairing but that is an '06 and I believe it has been moved to behind the tank?

Prepare for Assimilation!!

How much is metal scrap (read st1100-1300) worth these days  :D :D
Carefull there... Don't put the ST1100 in the same pile as the ST1300.

The ST1100 is (was) actually a pretty good bike. (IMO, anyway).

I think I recognized the description of his experience at D&H. I think this guy is here now.

Daniel, been over on the ST forum just to see what stuff and rumors they have to say about the FJR. A good number seem to think Yamaha is very difficult to deal with on warranty issues for some reason.

Most would like to ride an FJR just to see how it feels compared to the ST.

Mostly I wanted to see what other sport-touring riders had to say about their mounts.

I'm guessing it's jjsc6 (Jim). From this site...

Wednesday I flew from Houston to Birmingham. Jerold picked me up at the airport and up to Cullman we headed. This is about an hour drive. Let me say that this time with Jerold was quite a treat by itself. To say he is a super guy would be an understatement, and if you are willing on listening to what he has to say you can learn a hell of a lot about him. He has quite a mechanical background, and has a lot of common sense advice.
Finally at about 2:00, I headed out of the dealership in a light rain. At that point I decided to only go 200 miles to Meridian. Despite very limited time on FJRs (about 18 months ago), and not a lot of riding time in rain for many, many years, I quickly got comfortable and was running between 70 and 80mph. In the light rain I was doing 70 - 75, and in the heavier stuff I still was comfortable doing around 65mph. Just before Meridian, I saw two cars that had just gone into the ditch (the driver still in the car, and people just going to help them).

Yesterday I left Meridian at about 7:45. Without going into all the details, I ran mostly secondary roads, and it was about 525 miles back home. Got home at about 6:15. How was I feeling? 10 minutes later I was mowing the lawn, then cleaned the motorcycle.

I flew from Houston to Birmingham last Wednesday morning to pick it up at a dealer about an hour north (Cullman Alabama - D&H - these folks are awesome). The weather called for severe storms, and I had planned to ride 300 miles that day. At 2:00, I finally quit waiting for a break in the weather, and left the dealership in a light rain. I rode 200 miles, mostly in the rain. Nearing Meridian, I passed two cars that had just gone into the ditch. I was running between 60 and 75mph, depending on how hard the rain was coming down. I felt comfortable on it very quickly.
The ST guys sound like a classy, well-mannered bunch... don't think many of us would fit in. :haha:

But the question is.... "Do you really care SouthernFJR" ....that your riding a bike with pizazz as opposed to an appliance....uh....uh....do ya??? :D

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the guy who won the last IBR use an ST1300? As far as I'm concerned, they're a nice bike... and apparently can be driven to extreme lengths...

I knew that story sounded familiar!

Dang, your good. I wouldn't even have tried to find that!

That guys a real "dork"..... oh, wait a minute - I think that guy is me! (good call to those of you who figured it out).

Mike - now that I have an FJR, are you going to let me have more Cheese Nips when we do the throttle body synch on my FJR (remember me now???).

I would not call an ST1100 metal scrap. Put over 100,000 miles on a 91 ST1100 and it never let me down on the many trips I took with it. Would not call the ST1300 metal scrap either.

I find it humorous that Jerrold is still telling people how bad synthetic oil is for the FJR. He explained to me a few "facts of life" when I picked up my bike in October of 2002. He's a nice enough guy but I know from personal experience that some of those "fact" are personal opinion. No need to throw it back in his face though. After all, he's a nice guy and runs a great company. I kept my own counsel, smiled, and let those "facts" I disagreed with slip on past.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the guy who won the last IBR use an ST1300?
Shane Smith is an excellent rider and was a contender in every IBR he's ridden. Remember that the 12th place finisher in 2003 was on a 250cc Ninjette. That rider part of the equation counts a lot.

Oh I agree wholeheartedly that even the most indestructible bike if ridden by a bozo won't cut the mustard... and the best riders can probably beat me using a moped... the point I was making was that someone like Shane wasn't held back by riding an ST1300... or not enough to cause him to finish second....

Jerold told me the same thing about synthetic. But let's be clear on this - he told me up front that it is his opinon based upon years of observation. He never represented them as "facts".
