Nice weather here lately.
Last week, I finally washed the Blue Demon.
I'll admit I spend very little time farkling or cleaning.
(If it was just a ****** Gen 1, I probably wouldn't even bother. )
The ride.
Well, WFO will be here in no time.
And we all know what that will involve.
So, I figured I'd head up there while that area is still a good destination.
(Fortuna is a little town just south of Eureka, near where Hwy. 36 hits the coast and 101.)
And I really like riding Highway 36.
So, I left early Saturday morning, jammed up 5 to Red Bluff, and rode out 36 to Fortuna,
had lunch (chicken) and then turned around and rode back on 36,
and then down the valley and back to my rented shack. Just under 600 miles total, but
if you stop often enough for photos, it makes for a long day.
And of course I took a bunch of pictures of my FJR sitting in front of stuff.
Actually, I take a lot of pictures that don't include my bike, but I never post 'em here,
because this is the FJRForum,....after all.
So, here's what my ride looked like -- with a motorcycle posed in front of it.
About 50 photos (really) and a few captions.
Left in the dark.
Isn't it GREAT to be riding when the sun comes up?
Coffee and gas a hundred miles in.
Red Bluff just after sunrise.
Hey. Remember this place, boys?
Looking back east.
The Sacramento River. (Yup, it runs through Red Bluff first.)
Then outta town and into the fun part.
I considered just riding by the stinkin' sign, but that's hard to do.
Good ol' 36.
The road itself is tons-of-fun to ride, but I think the scenery is why I keep going back.
Oh, and I should mention...
There was almost NO traffic, I saw ONE LEO the entire length of 36 (just outta Red Bluff on my way back),
and the temps were from the high 50's to the mid 70's. There is no better time for riding these stretches.
I pulled off on a number of side roads along the way.
Trying to look casual after running across the road to get into the shot.
I arrived near the coast and Fortuna at just after 12 noon. Right on schedule.
Just kidding. I had no schedule.
Had lunch at an groovy little chicken joint.
Can't tell you the name of the place,
...but I had the 2 piece meal, original recipe, with a side of baked beans.
Filled my blue gas tank with 87 octane, picked another good playlist on my music device,
removed a layer (it was getting warmer), and headed right back the way I had come!
(Yes, I KNOW there are plenty of other routes I coulda taken. Had my reasons.)
Here are some shots I got on the return trip.
Gemini?
BFT's.
BFR.
Some of the higher-speed section as I again approached Red Bluff.
This little spot is very.....interesting.
As you approach it, if you're riding aggressively, you might be doing, oh, 80 or so.
Looks simple enough. You know the road turns. There's a sign and all, and looking ahead it's
fairly obvious that you'll need to slow a good bit.
But, ...there's this big-assed DIP!
It's more severe than it appears in the photo.
And just as you're braking or setting up for the freakin' 90 degree left,
you find yourself VERY light and not in good contact with the road.
Just about completely blew it here a coupla years ago.
And if I recall correctly, Orangvale (Andrew-RIP) mentioned almost losing it here on a ride he took with Cello II (Alan).
So,.....there's that.
Okay! I seriously could have just turned around and gone back for another 150 miles of fun,
but it was getting late, and I had to turn south for home.
A quick stop in ....
...and a look around town.
The feed store and palm trees. California!
Back on the highway, and so glad to have spent the day on my motorbike!
And of course, a truck pic.
All finished. Thanks for looking in.
Comments welcomed, of course.
