c2...does it only happen when the lever alone is pressed. If u apply the rear brake at the same time u squeeze the lever (lightly, as you say), all is well? Nuthin to do with ABS! The phenom you describe may be an idiosyncrasy of this particular linked design. However, I hope I`m wrong about this cus I would think it would feel freakY. :assassin:
Can't speek for c2 but mine will do it all the time running or stopped with the key on or off & only pulling the front lever.

Step away from your motorcycle. Put the keys in a safe place. Make an appointment to get it worked on ASAP. Since your front brake symptoms aren't unique, share the solution with the collective. ;)

First off let me explain my knowledge in mechanics,It is zilch, so this may not even make sense to a real mechanic.

However I have experienced somewhat the same thing happening with my 2002 GMC pickup with ABS.

Last winter I was driving real slow in a parking lot and tried to stop on a patch of ice, when I applied the brakes the wheels started sliding and my brake pedal slowly went to the floor. I had to get off the brake and back on it to get some brake pressure again. My daughter experienced the same thing in a Dodge car.

Apparently when the abs senses the wheel sliding it releases the brake pressure slowly to prevent you from over braking. It is scary the first time I experienced it in a vehicle.

Now like I said up front , I am not a mechanic, but could you have a sensor problem that thinks your wheel is sliding and is slowly releasing pressure?

something else to think about.

Mac

Hm...noone corrected you, fencer. Must be on some kind of yellow brick road?

I'm a lurker that finally registered and this may not be a complaint but simply a question of the fjr's personality.
When braking very gently with one finger on the front lever the lever slowly continues moving back toward the grip as if the fluid is bleeding out. If I do this long enough the lever actually continues to come back until it makes contact with the grip and there is no braking and no room left to pull the lever. It stops dead at the grip.

If I pull a tiny bit harder than I need to slow down, the brake works fine. but then I have to pull and release rather than keep the steady gentle pressure.

I've asked two Yamaha dealerships mechanics and both say it is not a defect but a normal action of the ABS system.

Is this true? With all of the complaints I've seen on this site I've not been able to find anyone else talking about this one......................
c2insa, yes there is a problem and I have the same one exactly. I need to get the bike to the dealer ASAP and so do you. I started noticing this problem only while backing up with the lever bleeding down from day one. In the last couple days it has started doing it slightly while moving forward. Here is a link I posted awhile back. Brake Problem Post I got it from an inside source that is and has happend to other 2006 FJR's. This problem needs to fixed now. Good luck and let me know what happen's. PM. <>< :angry2:

It's already been to the dealer.

I've tested this with the foot brake on and the same thing still happens. ALWAYS!!!

Where do I turn now?

c2insa,

I've been to the dealer also at the 600 mi. service and brought this up. I am now going back to the dealer because the problem has started to get worse. If the problem is not taken care of by the dealer, I will go the next step and file a formal complaint with yamaha. Check the language in your warranty papers and it will guide you what to do next. You have a one year warranty and if like most have purchased an extended warranty. Be firm and tell them you are not going to go away until the problem is fixed. Remember the sqeeky wheel gets the grease. Good luck and let me know what happens. I will be interested and I will do the same. Thanks, PM. <>< :assassin:

You have two options as I see it.

1) Go back to the dealer you have been to already and tell them something is definitely wrong and you demand that it be fixed.

2) Go to another dealer.

The 06 linked system has a feature off the pedal only that when "light pressure" is applied it only applies the rear brake, I'm worried that the brake lines could be installed incorrectly at assembly & the front lever is now tied into that? Because mine feels like a mechanical bypass (like a valve opens) & releases the pressure.
This is the first I've heard of this feature. I think it's a great idea in that you can regulate when the linked braking is employed when using the rear brake. How did you find out about this? Where can I find out more about it?

It's in the very front of the 06 service manual, "Overview of Linked brake system"

Hm...valve opens and relieves the pressure.....sounds kinda gay....let's ask twn, shall we?

This is very cool ... if it works.

Back to the dealer today because they didn't do a tbs at the 600. 4 and 2 were off a bit. Dealer still says nothing is wrong with the braking issue. Best of all, they charged me for 1 hour labor (80 bucks) to do the tbs. this makes the 600 cost me over 300 bucks cuz they also "always put an additive in the oil and diff lube". Anyway, the next closest dealer is an hour away. How do I reach the Yamaha techs?. If they don't help then the only other way I know is to take it back enough times to qualify for lemon law dispute. but that burns bridges.........

I'm somewhat confused. Does the dealer acknowledge that the brakes have some kind of problem, or do they say they are working fine? Also, how does the bike stop during normal riding conditions?

" Caution Brake Problem"

Simple fix if the mechanic knew what was wrong.

Take it back to the dealer and have him replace the front master cylinder it is defective !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

.

The mechanic should know and if he refuses go get a lawyer and when you get in a wreck or get killed sue, sue .and sue till you get every last penney of that shops.

Common problem with brakes whether abs, unilink, power, hydraulic or mechanical.

I have an '06 and it does NOT do this. What area are of the country are you in? I'm wondering if you can hook up with someone else from the forum and go to the dealer together. Show them two bikes side by side and have them explain the problem...I don't know if it possible, but it's an idea.

Well I would start by telling them you need it in writing for your lawyer, next of kin and Yamaha USA.

Dropped mine off at the dealer last night, demonstrated the problem to them. They acknowledge the problem with the bike & said they would be on the phone with Yamaha first thing today. I will keep you posted on what will be done to mine.
