I have seen a variety of ways to jack up the front of the bike for tire removal, most have to do with slinging it off some device from overhead like a pipe frame or a ladder or something.

My question is: Can you put a couple jack stands (or something custom sized that resembles a jack stand) under the frame sliders to hold the front of the bike up?? Seems to me they would be strong enough to hold the bike, they are designed to hold the bike when it falls over.

Has anyone done this? Is it a stupid idea or is there a hundred posts about people doing this and I just haven't seen them?

I just use a floor jack under the headers.

Once the front wheel is removed, if I also need to remove the rear,

I just lower the jack a bit.

I use jack stands (sitting on top of a couple of bricks) under the sliders every time I have to pull the front wheel. It works great.

I'd worry about the bending stress on the bolts and the frame. That's one heavy bike ledged on the end of the bolts.

Most of the bike's weight is on the center stand. I can rotate the front wheel off the ground myself and I'm not very strong. I'll pull the front off the ground, slide a block of wood under the tire with my foot, then position the jack stands under the sliders. I wouldn't jump up and down on the bike like this, but I doubt you'd bend the bolts or do any damage to the frame. I've done a dozen times with no problems.

Board on a jack under the headers. Fast and easy. I have a hydraulic scissor jack which moves vertically, not like a rolling floor jack. A plain piston jack would work, too, but it moves slower.

I like the pipe frame but can you get to the steering head bearings?
Surely yes!I have done once..Have a look at this link:

If you decide to make this stand, make the tall version..
Mihalis, did you do this project before or after enjoying that 12 pak of Widmer?

I built the tall version pipe stand, came in very handy while modding front and rear suspension simultaneously. A jack under the headers works fine for supporting the front only.

These pictures aren't from my bike..

I am afraid to support the front end with a jack under the headers because perhaps it could bend the pipes there and they cost a lot..!!

I prefer the pipe frame for this job for sure...

Well, yes, go ahead and be afraid to use a method that other people have used without incident, because your bike might behave differently..... :p

I use the exact same method that wfooshee demonstrates. Easy to set up and adjust height. If you're worried about stressing the header pipes add a little additional weight to the rear seat or luggage rack area. But I don't think its a concern. There isn't much wight on the pipes.

WTF is with that text size?

Text size

You hit the subscript or superscript button when you started your post!!

I don't have an issue with the slider idea except I get a little sloppy moving things around and this seems to put the jack stand in a location that could scratch the heck out of my poor bike. Jack under header works good for me.

I also got into the habit of sliding a ripped down piece of moulding (or similar scrap) between the pipes and the pan, thinking that might take up some of the space should the pipes look to flex upwards. Loosen the 4mm hexs on the lower fairing if it looks like you'd be transferring any force to that instead of the engine.
