Has any one seen this problem before? When I disconnected and removed the battery from my otherwise bulletproof 08 for our long, dark Canadian winters the tach and speedo needles did one sweep of the gauges like they normally do upon start up. Problem is they did not return to "0" They both stopped at about the 11 o'clock position. Is that just because of the interuption of juice when I removed the battery and now without power they won't return? I'm hoping in the spring when I reconnect the battery they are powered up and go back to 0.

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance,

Fuzzy

My $0.02 -- (with inflation it is now worth even less) The gauge readings are supplied by the ECU via a serial communication bus and drives stepper motors which move the speed and tach needles. If the gauge needles were being driven during the Power On Self Test (POST) and the power is suddenly disconnected, the driver motors may well have been left in this position. I'll step up and guess with 99% certainty that the gauges will sweep again when you supply power, then return to zero.

Tach and speedo needles are driven by stepper motors. IOW, current

needed to move needles in both directions. Needles likely stopped

where power was interrupted. They *should* return to normal

operation when battery is reconnected.

There's an echo in here somehow . . . .

Um, how hard is it to just hook the battery (or any 12-volt source) up and see what happens?

At least the echo reflected the same words ;) Never read the previous replies, respond only to the OP's questions.

Given that the OP lives in St Albert, AB he's looking for the ongoing speculation and conjectures to continue and entertain him until the snow pack is gone in July, then he will be able to access his FJR and hook it back up to power. Winters are loooooonnnnngggggg in the Edmonton area.

Dude, you're in Canada, in January. Of course they are frozen along with everything else. :p

You need a hammer and chisel.

Break through the plastic to access the needle.

Place chisel on needle.

Whack chisel with hammer as if it were a venomous snake.

That will fix the needle problem!

You're welcome!

Thanks fellas. Every one of your replies have merit. Especially ionbeam and Geezer. :cold:

I will let you know just before the summer solstice! :sadsmiley:

I predict all will be OK.... for now watch the Oilers, Flames, Canucks and the Winterpeg Jets!!

Since you're bored anyway, why not take your battery from wherever you are storing it, touch it to your terminals and wait for your guages to finish the sweep? Then you don't have to wonder, and it will take up 10 minutes of the long arduous wait for warm weather. :dribble:

Yah, and if the needles don't finish the sweep, at least then, you do have something to wonder/worry about...

If it was me, I would have to know!

I would charge and lug a battery to the bike for sure.

I would not want to let it sit and fester if it is an issue.
