I'll pass it along. Thanks. It would be a hoot if something like that actually fixed it

I did pass along all the tips that have been shared, most recently the possibility that it might be the rear brake switch. They have dutifully checked the various ideas.

As mentioned earlier, the parts that were supposed to arrive last Thursday were in this past Tuesday instead, and because of the hunting season and the need for new ATVs in the field, my bike waited until today for the R&R and test ride.

They swapped out the ECU, which in my mind should have been the first change after checking the connections, and they test rode the bike for a bit over 100 miles with no failure.

So ... the plan is that they will ride it again tomorrow. And then again on Tuesday when they open after the weekend (they're one of the closed on Monday bunch).

If there is no failure after Tuesday's test ride, I will go get it on Wednesday.

On the brighter side, I've been having a lot of fun with the '09 FJR that I acquired out of Wisconsin. I spent more happy time on that bike today, and it is my new favorite, displacing both the Bonneville and the Rocket III Touring.

Long ago (well, 3 years ago) I decided that the FJR was an easy preferred bike compared to my K1600GTL, so the FJR continues to win the comparos.

When this ends, I'll reveal the dealer's name, and I expect it will be with a positive recommendation. The fact that it has been there for 5 weeks isn't their fault. The problem that has caused this delay is the fact that Yamaha USA is not stocking parts for the FJR AE in the USA. The major components appear to all be stuck in Japan. The dealer has been stuck in the middle. It is to their credit that they have stayed with it, and all the evidence so far suggests that the sales department is sucking it up and will eat the cost of the repair. This is refreshing to see in the modern era, and the dealership would appear to me to be worth patronizing. I wish they were local, but both AEs that I've recently acquired were in other states.

El Toro - You have the patience of Buddha. You are also fortunate to be working with such a great dealer. The status reports are fascinating to follow, along with the side comments and suggestions from other forum members. I had similar symptoms with my 2010 model and assumed it was the often discussed spyder problem. I examined and serviced them all and replaced one. Problem has not yet reappeared. Maybe I was lucky. Please keep us posted. Hope it has been resolved permanently.

If it's the ground spider issue that you're referring to, Yamaha lead them through it early in the process, and had them run some new wires here and there, all to no avail. My local dealer's Gold Level Technician initially thought that squirrely ground issues could be at the root of it.

As it turns out, maybe by the end of the day tomorrow I'll be planning the run to get it.

I thought about having my wife take me down there so that I could ride it home, but it's 180 miles away, and I have to admit, the prospect of having it die on the road at the 90 mile mark isn't one that I am comfortable with.

So ... I will head down there with my trailer when they've given their blessing, and when I get home the bike will get out of the trailer and go for a 90 mile loop ride in familiar territory.

Sigh....

On the one hand, if I were relying on this bike as my primary bike or as a major part of my personal transportation, I'd be a lot less patient. On the other hand, I did buy it used, with no warranty expressed or implied. I am lucky the dealer has been committed to "old fashioned values."

I think this bike may end up as one that gets traded toward that Cobalt Blue 2016 ES model that I am now officially jonesing for.

I think the '09 is safe and may be with me until the end of my days. How stupid do you have to be to trade away an AE model 4 times? Stay tuned ...

Continuing on the NO JOY theme ... I called late this afternoon to check on the status of the bike.

Because of weather (continuous rain for the last several days), they have not gotten to complete their confirming test rides.

So ... Maybe test rides tomorrow, afterwhich we'll find out what's next.

If the bike is still DEAD, I think we've approached the tipping point and should begin to look at how to bring the whole thing to a successful resolution.

No doubt I'm pretty tired of it. If they'd worked on it last week when they were getting those ATVs ready for hunters, they would have had plenty of time to test ride and we'd either be done, or on to the next set of parts from Japan.

Sigh....

We may be at the finale.

The test riding on Wednesday was uneventful and ended with a call to me to say that the bike appeared to be fixed.

They needed Thursday to put the tupperware back on :). I guess they weren't making flat rate.

I drove down there today and the bike emerged from the trailer at my house around 3 pm. No, it was not going to be a fly 'n ride ... or even a drive 'n ride. I was not trusting the bike for primary transportation with a route that started 180 miles from my house.

So ... out of the trailer and onto I-40 into the westering sun.

I rode to a bit past sunset without incident.

Except ... it appears that the ambient air temperature sensor may not have been hooked up as part of the button up.

It was cold today, but it was not a perpetual 16 F.

In any event, everything else works as intended. All of the other display reports appear to be either correct, or at least plausible.

Power was good. Handling was good. Gas mileage was good.

And I continue my love affair with the YCC-S feature. My left hand has improved dramatically, but on the return part of the loop, I rode through heavy State Championship High School Football traffic, and not having to test my hand was quite a joy.

So ... the '09 AE will be the keeper. The '08 is probably going to be trade fodder when the 2016 FJR1300ES arrives.

The Epilogue...

With Ionbeam's and MCATropy's valuable assistance, this project is finally at a conclusion.

Thanks to both, and to the others who gave suggestions, comfort, and support.

As of this afternoon, the '08 is fully functional and rarin' to go.

It has been thoroughly test ridden with no hiccups for hundreds of miles, so the ECU must have been the ticket, as would have been expected by anyone who could read the service manual and who had successfully tested for the continuity, ground, and display function.

And although the dealer screwed up when they put it back together and forgot to plug in the ambient air temperature sensor under the front cowl, this was not a terrible job to sort out, and it is now completed.

This bike may turn out to be the favored bike. Its clutch is smoother. The '09 may be in the queue for a clutch soak.

But with the Pilot Power tires and the smoother clutch, the '08 is the bike that will make the other bike more dangerous. It definitely has farther limits, especially with those tires.
