Sea Level to 4000 ft: 40.5 mpg

>5000 ft: 48.4

Unless I rode up and back East of the Sierra Nevada on US-395, I wouldn't be able to stay between 4,000 and 5,000 feet anywhere near where I ride.

Best wishes.

Things improve greatly after you get a couple thousand miles out of the way.

Initially got 36-40, then averaged about 44 on the commute (mostly highway).

At around 7k miles took a 600 mile trip with my daughter and loaded bags at mostly 75-90mph and got 50mpg. Since this trip my worst mileage has been 42 and my best 53. It really does depend on whether you're covering ground or working the throttle alot through twisties at slower speeds. I did do the Barbarian jumper mod after the first couple thousand miles. I don't know if that has any affect on mileage. Others may have more input on that.

Here's what I've seen on mine since I really started to keep track.

I've got about a 3.8 gallon aux fuel tank.

2003, 20K miles, sea level, mix of freeway & stop-n-go traffic, not riding at a race pace but never really light on the throttle, pretty much a consistent 40MPG.

sounds like I'm gonna have to push this FJR awhile to equal my old ST1100 mpg. And it hadda bigger tank!

Average 35 mpg. Best mileage while on a trip to San Antonio, trying to be mostly legal, or look like it, anyway, two-up and loaded, was 43 mpg.

When my son and I terrorize the backroads, him on a 600RR, me chasing on the FJR, I've seen it drop to 31 mpg.

Running 87 octane regular, name-brand gas, with Holeshots and a Power Commander with the Wally map.

Good enough for me. By the way, his 600RR averages about 32 mpg on premium 93.

Never been happy with fuel consumption on the FJR. I rarely get above 40mpg (imperial not US) and I don't really thrash the bike.

Solved that now...bought a car with drinking problem last month so the FJR looks real frugal now. Its all a matter of perspective!

Question, Do California Smog devices on our FJR have something to do with lesser fuel efficiency? I wonder what we would see if we compared dyno sheets between a CA bike and a bike without all the smog stuff on?

IMHO, no. Just the crap gas that we have available. Expect to see an increase when you purchase away from our border. Others have experienced this and will answer, I'm sure.

I think the only difference on the Cali bike is that it has a carbon canister that collects gas fumes from the tank vent. That won't affect your gas mileage at all. Actually a carbon filter, other than extra weight might not be a bad idea for all the bikes as I can usually smell some gasoline venting when I part the bike in the garage after a ride.

+1

See my post about oxygenated fuel and how you take a hit on fuel consumption when using it.
