Since we do have a number of engineers who are members of the FJR Forum and some of them are involved with automotive engines and testing who  take a position opposite of yours, some background and support evidence (vis a vis: test results from an independent study) for your statements might be in order.

.....then didn't like the answers that disagreed with their supposition.
It's not that I don't like the answers, but it doesn't mean I have to agree!!!! As for background, I have been in the automotive field all of my life. No I am not a mechanic or an engineer but, I am not totally ignorant to mechanics either. I guess I am playing devils advocate some people have reported on going problems with surging and harsh on off throttle problems so I am just trying to see what people are running fuel wise, yes I do believe you can run 87 octane and have no problem. I am not arguing that at all. So I do appreciate everyones input. I my self am going to try running 87 octane and see how she runs. Now my 07 R6 calls for 91 minimum octane in the owners manual yes two different types of bikes.

bwaahahahahahahaha

If there is a knock sensor on the FJR (most bikes have historically not bothered), then you have to take into consideration that knock sensors are notoriously unreliable. They look for a high frequency transient, and its hard to distinguish this from the other general "noise." I'm not saying it isn't done, and the FJR may have one, but like I said in the earlier post, typical motorcycle engines aren't prone to knock. I guess that since the FJR is nearly 1300ccs over 4 cylinders, that it may be entering the domain where a knock sensor could start to work. I'll have my service manual in the coming week, so I can check it out.

We run YZF R6 engines in our student built and raced formula cars. We are restricted to a 20mm air intake, and so we have to develop our own fuel and timing maps with an aftermarket programmable engine control module.

We advance timing by as much as 60 degrees with impugnity for some conditions. We don't have knock issues.

No knock sensor on any FJR model, all years.

The spark timing is not adjustable and it is not accessible via a PCIII or equivalent.

I will post a picture regarding octane later tonight that will make some eat words. Maybe not the Gen I's but on MY 07 AE it says 91 Octane. And I can prove it with photo's. So I will put my pic up against anyone's 1000 words! :****:

I think that the 91 octane rating is a Research rating. Octane is determined by how well a fuel resists compression ignition, with iso-octane (an isomer of C8H18) as the basis for comparison. They do the tests under two conditions. One set of test conditions gives the Motor Octane Number (MON) and the other gives the Research Octane Number (RON).

On pumps in the US, the octane rating that is given to us is (RON + MON)/2, or the average value of the two tests.

In other countries they generally post RON, and since RON is generally higher than MON, a rating of 91 for research octane number would be relatively close to an average octane rating of 86 or 87.

Sorry if this info has been posted before. I'm new to the group.

We'll be waiting..............

But you might want to wait until next Friday.

How do they figure the octane rating in New Hampshire? Is it ([R+M)/2] method or Research octane figure? It will be straited on the octane rating sticker on the pump, that will determine what octane you need to run.

It's Federal...so the same. And also is the same for Canada. It's not a state or provincial function. Unless you're in Europe octane ratings are consistent at the pumps.

....and this thread is all a stupid rehash of many, Many, MANY stupid threads before. Do some reading and searching on this overhashed subject second only to oil.

Man, I wish I could make it so that people would lose a post count everytime they post in NEPRT....

B-b-b-but Admin-Meister Iggy, would you really want to take away our opportunity for applied humor and wit or remove our outlet to exercise our collective temporary insanity? :unknw:

Yes perhaps we should all out our collective efforts into solving my problem with code 12. I for one would think that's where our efforts belong! ;)

Perhaps you should have thought of that before YOU started this thread where YOU continue to fan it? ;)

Sometimes people don't get the hint that a NEPRT thread should be embarrassing because they didn't bother reading....so I don't find it that funny.

We're again down to the fundamental issues that some people suck much more out of this forum than they provide and some people think it's OK to inflict thread after thread of rehash. I, for one, think there's sometimes too much noise and not enough signal and will continue to encourage signal. ;)

Are you guys kidding me??!! Three pages of "what octane should I run in my FJR?" How's about this: Look at any write-ups about the FJR and the first thing they all praise is the fact that the bike runs on 86 fuel, ie. not premium; however, it is your FJR and your money, so run whatever the **** you want. Sheesh!!! :)

UMMM, I didn't start this thread on octane. I've definately seen enough Iggy scoldings to know better than to start such a stupid thread, I do admit to a halfassed hijacking to get some more input on my code 12 thread since noone but Ionbeam seems to give a **** that I need some experienced help with it.

I'm not looking to get on anyone's **** list here, especially yours, but I do like to dogpile as much as anyone. Could hardly help myself here on this one, ciz I had to work on Friday and missed out.

Not a big smoke up the ass blower here, but when it comes to tech problems, You(Iggy),Warchild , Ionbeam, haulinashe, radman , and a few others are the ones I consider to be the authority on things around here, and I'm a little bummed I haven't seen any input from anyone but Alan. I was counting on it really. I spent a good long time on the phone with Alan, last night while I was at work, and felt comfortable being able to check his suggestions out; until I got home and worked in my garage until 2:30 AM pulling stuff apart to find I can't access the stupid plug I m after without dismantling a crapload of stuff.

So sorry if I fanned what shouldn't have been, but .....

It wa simply a cry for attention.

;)
