Hey guys,

I lurk at that FZ-1 forum and am signed up but it will never let me log in to post or look around. I bet all the forums will do that to me when they figure it out. ;)

I also have been looking hard at the new FZ just to play on until I get ready to buy an FJR. Not sure yet what I'll end up with but I love the R1 engine and yet want the "comfort" of a naked bike. I use that term loosely because it looks like without a seat upgrade on the FZ it might be anything but comfortable. I'm fairly sure I'd be content with the stock FJR seat though.

Other FZ riders, some even owners of FJRs, seem to be very happy with their Yamahas. I can't imagine either one not being a blast to ride.

Hopefully others will chime in here and talk about their FZ-1s ...we already know how much they love the FJR. I completely understand even though I've yet to ride one.

Someday soon hopefully!

Cheers! :drinks:

Thanks for the info - I was able to sign-up without any problem on the FZ1 board - maybe the background check hasn't come back yet. ;)

Pretty big site.

I visited it a bit trying to decided between the FZ1 and the FJR...
I have a deposit on a 06 FJR (to replace the Gran Canyon I'm selling) and I'm seriously thinking about replacing the 96 SS with an FZ1 the following year. Left over or barely used 06 FZ1. Even thought about replacing BOTH (Gran Canyon and SS ) with an FZ1. Problem is I don't know about significant other's confort on the FZ1 for long trips... She's 5'8" 150lbs..... (I ain't giving any more measurements :D )

Anybody care to comment?

The later FZ are different than the 06 FZ1. The new one is going to have a much harder more aggresive style seat like the R1. Having read about how comfortable the olders are and some of the people who own them think the newer one looks like it would be uncomfortable in comparison.

Best I can do...

I too, am thinking of buying a new FZ-1 next year and I visit the FZ-1 forums to gather as much info about the bike as I can.

Here is a link to a comparison of the 2006 FZ-1 to the 2005 R1.

It looks like they are more alike than different, and I agree that the FZ-1 is more aggressive looking than previous models but that may just add to the fun factor. ;)

I guess to really be comfortable all day and still have a sport like ride you would have to have the FJR. That's not a bad thing but it's sometimes difficult to have everything you'd like to have.

I sat on one at the show in Dallas and it seemed much more upright than the R1 - was actually considering one for the wife since she hates the crouched over position (on a bike at least :D ) Regardless I don't think it would be good for 2-up. The FJR would be much better IMO but then again I didn't order one for her to be on the back as she rides an 1100 V* - was just looking for something you could keep up with me on!

Which one, the new FZ-1 or the R1?

The seats and power delivery are about as similar as any two bikes build from what I can derive by the little info we have and the photos.

The wife's butt probably won't be any less uncomfortable on the pillion than we will be in the pilot's seat.

Someone said they thought the new FZ seat design looked like a torture machine. It looks like last years R1 seat and those guys aren't sitting in one spot for long.

Hopefully one of the aftermarket seat makers will offer something more suited to longer rides.

And the passenger on the new, higher torque, 150hp FZ-1 will just have to hang on tighter. :D

I'm ready!

Hi everyone. I've been a member of the FZ1OA for almost 3 years now. I purchased a leftover '02 FZ1 in March of '03. It's a wonderful machine and with a few mods, is a real hoot in the mountains and is fairly comfortable for 400-500 mile days of riding. The OEM seat isn't bad but after an hour in the saddle, hot spots develop in the crotch area. I purchased a Corbin seat and am not totally happy with it, but it does allow longer rides without the hot spots developing. The Corbin or OEM seat isn't as wide or spacious as the FJR seat, but it's not bad for a semi-sportbike. With Ivan's jet kit and a slip-on, I recorded 128 rwhp (SAE) and 73 lb/ft of torque. I've recently upgraded the exhaust to a full SS Muzzy with Ivan's MD jet kit for full exhaust systems. I expect an additional 5 hp and maybe another 1-2 lb/ft of torque with that mod. I've replaced the OEM handlebar with a gold anodized Rizoma and the comfort at the wrists and forearms was improved quite a bit. I've also upgraded the suspension both front and rear on the FZ1. I installed Traxxion Dynamics Axxion valving and TD springs out front and installed a Penske 8981 double adjustable. This was the best improvement to ride and handling anyone could do to the FZ1. Now, it's got great power, incredible handling and it still is quite capable of day or weekend trips to the mountains 2-up. I got tired of lashing a large Cortech tail bag on the Euro Yamaha tail rack and loading up an Eclipse expandable tank bag just to go off for a weekend trip. I purchased a slightly used '05 FJR on the 5th of Nov and see it as the comfortable sport touring machine I tried to make the FZ1 into. I enjoy the light weight of the FZ1 but the passenger comfort is far better on the FJR with lower and farther forward passenger pegs and a wider and better padded pillion. The hard bags, standard tail rack, larger full coverage fairing, larger fuel cell, better over all comfort and range of the FJR will allow me to focus the FZ1 more towards comfortable 1-up weekend romps in the mountains of GA, NC, and TN.

So far, I've upgraded the rear suspension on the FJR with a Penske 8981 and will be upgrading the forks next month.

The '01-'05 FZ1 is about the best all around motorcycle on the planet and can be picked up used with fairly low mileage for a song <$5k. It is fairly bulletproof, gets decent fuel mileage 42+ mpg, and is fairly fast. There is loads of information regarding any type of mod or upgrade you might have in mind for it. The guys and gals of the FZ1OA are a great bunch of folks. They are supportive, informed and in love with their toys whether they are FZ1s, FJRs or any other motorcycle they might own or have owned.

You couldn't go wrong purchasing an FZ1. The '06 model is more sharply focused and may not be the "do-it-all" bike the '01-'05 model is. We'll see how it goes when the '06 model hits our shores and starts getting purchased and modified.

Cheers! :)

Thanks for checking in Lee. You will be seeing one of my Yammie forks soon, which to do.....FZ or FJR ?? A predicament for sure.

Hey there Hotboot. :)

I can't advise you on which set of forks to upgrade. Both have soft springs and need some revalving to match the stiffer required springs. There is still a special purchase going on for the FZ1OA for full upgrades to the front forks. Either the standard respring/revalving service or the AK-20 cartridge kit is 10% off with free return shipping . The offer is good as long as we receive the forks prior to 31 Dec.

I believe because of the nature of the beast that the FZ1 will respond better to a fork modification. There is close to a 150 lb difference in weight between the FZ1 and the FJR which promotes harder and more aggressive riding on the FZ1. For that reason alone, the FZ1 would be my choice for suspension mods.

My '05 FJR doesn't have as bad of suspenders as the FZ1. The FJR is quite heavy too which doesn't promote as aggressive riding. Either bike will respond well to a suspension upgrade.

Pick your poison. Flip a coin if you cannot decide. :D

I loved my '02 FZ-1 and tuned the hell out of it (Thank you Crago Racing) and truly miss it. Suspension was a little soft but that was easily fixed. The seating position was awesome and the stock seat was bearable but also easily fixed. I was able to ride all day with my R-1 buddies and it was great on track days, even if it did drag pegs a little too much. Definitely a bike for most people. Powerful, comfortable, easy to ride and a good hooligan streak!

I sat on the new '06 FZ-1 at the shows in Seattle and Long Beach and did not like it. Too R-1ish. High tank with a deep notch seat in the frame. Makes you feel like you are in the bike, not on the bike.

At the first of the year I am in the market for a second bike and it will be either an R-1 or a GSXR-1000. Being practical makes me want to look at the FZ-1 (either new or used) to save my back. The FZ-1 is an awesome bike. Spend some time on the FZ1OA forum to see some true fans of the bike.

I've been eyeballing sportbike recently. Comments from my son-in-law are making me think more about the FZ-1. Any comments on the fun factor of the FZ-1 for track days (as compared with a full on sportbike)?

Undecided in CA

and pushing 60 :dribble: (not mph)

Lots of people use them for track days.

A full out sportbike does a better job of it though. The FZ1 higher bars are not good for higher speeds with control. They have your arms up higher and out further so the aeros are not so good at high speed. Clip on lower bars that are not as wide suit that type of riding much better. The footpegs drag easily at the track when using full sport tires. The FZ1 is also 75-100 lbs heavier than a full sport bike so rider fatigue would become a factor during a busy track day where you could get out on the track for 4 to 5 twenty minute sessions.

Now, if you just wanted to cruise around the track with the other beginners you would probably still enjoy it on the FZ1.

sportryder, where did you buy your Penske from?

Thanks Sportryder.

I've only been on the track one (loved it), but I'm a bit concerned by the requirement of having tires with 75-80 tread. If I get a full-on sportbike I would have to throw away a lot of perfectly good tires, since I don't see myself using it much on the street. Not to mention that I don't want to learn how to mount and balance tires.

I need to talk with some track junkies to see how they handle the tire situation.
