Numb, you are still on the same battery since this thread started correct? I didnt see a post saying you have tried another one yet.

Do you own a battery tender as opposed to a charger?

Zappo, scotch eh? Havent acquired that taste yet... yea, same battery. No tender, just a charger. The new interstate battery should be here tomorrow.

Thanks for the replies so far. The battery is a scorpion battery - agm type- SYT14B-4. My charger has the function for agm batts specifically. Last nite, when I charged the batt and started the bike, I checked the batt - it said 13.6 volts. During lunch today, I ran home and checked the battery level again...12.8 volts. I tried to start the bike: it turned over fast for like two seconds or so- wahwahwahwha, then it made a SOUND. Not a sparky like sound, but something like it-kinda clicky like a connection was made. (My first thought was the batt connections weren't good, but they were tight). After the sound was made, the starter did the dead batt sound, Owah Owah Owah. After that I checked the voltage and it read 12.5 volts. By now, I gotta get back to work. I took the batt out of the bike and put it on a charger here at work. It wasn't on the charger for more than 3 minutes and was fully charged. Hmmmmm. We've hooked it up to a car light, to drain it and then we'll see how it charges. I want to see what the charger was charging the battery at in the agm mode and will find that out after we drain it down a bit. BTW, how many amps is normal for the starter to draw? Oh, the bike has 31000 miles on it.
I have the same miles and same year 05 and same Scorption battery same problem . EXACTLY LIKE YOU EXPLAINED !

Did you solve your problem ? Batterystuff.CON are not anwering my emails either. The SCORPION will not crank my bike. My other battery was only a year or so old too. They both will crank the bike right off the Battery Tender at 13 volts.....but after the bike sits a day down to 12.5.....no cold start at all. Same miles as yours and same year. 14.2 to 14.4 volts while running so that is not the issue.I am not seeing mine drain below 12.5 thus far with either battery. My first one battery lasted 8 YEARS.

Maybe scorpion batteries are inexpensive and worth every penny. $39? Sounds to me like people are getting what they pay for.

Yuasa yuasa yuasa. Or OEM which is also yuasa sourced. People get years out of the stock. Expensive? Yes. Good battery? Yes. Seems to be the consensus.

I didn't want to drop $150 for a stock so I ordered a yuasa aftermarket for $90 on Amazon. Flawless so far.

For the amount of hassle people have gone through in this thread, the extra $40 seems well worth it.

What's your time worth?

mc05...nice bike, sorry for your troubles - sucks, don't it? Zappo-I paid 70 bucks for my scorpion paper weight. I had ordered an interstate batt from a guy in town... waited 2 weeks for it to get here only to find out it wasn't a sealed battery. Threw my hands up in the air and went to the dealer. He's a pretty good guy, sold me the a stock battery 100 bucks. I started it when i put it in last week. Haven't even looked at the bike since then. Might get a chance next week sometime to ride. I just hope it starts

Please let me know how it goes with the stock. I am thinking something is up besides the battery since the last brand lasted all winter with just cranking it once a week without the Tender on it. Then I go for one ride this year and then the next time it died. Mine was $79 free shipping.....I have yet to even ride the damn thing. I might take it for a spin tomorrow but I am going to take my back up in the saddlebag for a quick jump if it fails on a fuel stop or somewhere. Damn I hate to spend anymore on batteries but you can't go without one. I might need just to ride it more but time is not on my side either.

Honestly don't understand going cheap on a battery. If taken proper care of, should last upwards of 4-5 years.. 99 times out of 100, ya get what you pay for..

Thanks I may go with that battery soon. The last battery was a UFG I think(I am not in my shop right now ) maybe from Apex Battery. That one I had to add acid when it came and I thought it was sealed when I ordered it since it said maintenance free......wrong. I have Shumacher battery maintainers and Battery Tenders. They are not the issue though. The problem is the amps/voltage or something aging on the bike besides me that is going south, LOL.

Most batteries including the yuasa are maintenance free AND need to have acid added upon delivery. That allows the battery to be activated on the day you get it as opposed to sitting on the shelf discharging.

They are VRLA batteries (valve regulated lead acid) and are considered "sealed" . The top snaps into place and is not intended to be removed.

It is not like a RV deep cycle or like a car battery where you would open it and add more electrolyte.

Another question, are you referring to a Schumacher charger as a maintainer? I didn't know they made maintainers and if you are confusing the two than that is likely your problem. Only asking because I have seen this scenario a lot.

If it isn't a maintainer that it probably boiled off your electrolyte and that is the issue.

They sell the Shumacher "trickle " chargers for several years at Walmart $20 .....they are just as nice as the Tenders and maintain quite well on my lawnmowers and ATV. I use the Battery Tender on my FJR for some reason though. I guess since they cost twice as much and the only thing different I see is an inline fuse on the cords.

Well, "trickle" chargers are not always battery maintainers. A trickle charger will still overcharge and boil your battery but is may take a while ... If left on for days unchecked it will damage the battery ....

The Deltran Battery "tender" is a maintainer .... So likely the reason for the greater cost ?

We may be saying the same thing but just being clear here ...

A maintainer will bring the battery up to 14.2 (or so) volts and then scale back to a float charge and will NOT overcharge ... There is some sensing and computer logic included in maintainers that trickle chargers do not have ... Hence greater cost ...

The Deltran are ok, Im partial to the Yuasa maintainers and there are a few higher cost ones that are very good as well ...

Thanks guys. You got me thinking and made me walk out to my garage to double-check my memory.

Thought I was ok but had to check. I have a Schumacher maintainer that's switched for 6v and 12v and which I've used on my old CT70 (back when it ran). Older version of this one.

Just left the Scorpion on the Tender for 24 hours and she would not crank the bike.Three week old battery now. No emails back from Batterystuff.CON !
