I'm in the market for another garage door opener and can't decide if I want a screw drive or belt drive. What are some of you guys pros and cons of each???

Thanks,

On a serious note though, I've heard great things abou the screw drive. Pretty quiet, they have one up here called the Xlerator or something, goe sup and down super quick. :)

I've had both ( two seven by nine doors here) and to be honest after three years of getting belted, I'll never go back to chain drive. To noisy, not as smooth as far as when it takes up slack going up or down. Chain inevitably needs lube which drips off or collects dust.. I think the chains might have been faster, but Hell, I ain't Batman. I don't need a speedy entrance or exit.

YMMV..

edit; ***.. just noticed the screw option instead of chain.. I know they work pretty good on the smaller door like mine, however a large door like our loading docks @work really kills the screw drives.

I've had both on a double wide door. I like the belt the best. Quieter, no maintenance. I figured they would all be belt drive by now.

I've never had a belt drive, but I've had chain and screw drive. Screw drive is epically superior. And someone said faster: some have a double-speed open, but they close at the standard speed, so nobody gets munched.

I've had chain and screw. Screw was louder. Never again. Next time I'll try a belt.

I love my belt drive. It's so quite the wife doesn't hear me sneak out with the girlfriend! :yahoo:

Screw drive definitly beats a chain drive after owning both but both are loud. I'll try a good belt drive next time around.

I've had my Overhead Door "Phantom" belt drive opener for over 12 years now. It is one quiet son of a gun! It's driven by a brushless DC motor, and coupled to a double car insulated roll up garage door by the same company. The brushless DC motor has a soft start and stop programmed into the controller. There is no jerking the door at all by the mechanism.

It cost a bit more, but worth it - IMHO.

Bust, in all honesty I am totally shocked that you do not have "screw drive", what with knowing your sexual preferences and all. Have had great service from screw drive garage door openers! Hell's Bell's hombre, we know that you are not The Batman; we know you are The Joker! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joker_(comics)

I picked up a Chamberlain belt drive at Home Depot. As Brodie stated it is extremely quiet and smooth. I think it surpasses any screw drive and chain style openers I have owned.

I've had all three at one point, and just installed a new belt drive in my garage last year on a custom wood door. Wouldn't use anything else at this point. Quiet and smooth.
