"I tried gluing a magnet to the remote and sticking it to the fuel tanks, but none of the glues/epoxies/superglues would keep the magnet stuck on"

Should have used 3M auto molding 2 sided tape.

+1 - For anything you want permanently stuck together, that is my new "go to" stuff.

It ain't cheap, but it does the job right. You can buy it in Auto parts stores.

I had an interesting one when I velcroed the opener to the dash shelf. It quit working. Take it off, works, put it back on, doesn't work. Turns out that the metal shelf was pulling the transmitter frequency off enough that the receiver no longer would either hear it or decode the transmission. So I just put it under the clear plastic cover of my tank bag.

I used a Genie Intellicode 1 button remote (the small one).. They are powered by a 12V battery so all you have to do to customize for permanent installation is pop it open, solder a red wire on the positive battery tab, black on the negative tab and 2 wires for the button to a momentary switch, reseal with self fusing silicone tape. Drill small hold in the glove box, install momentary switch and connect the red wire to the center lead of the cigarette lighter style outlet and black lead to the outer shell lead of the cig lighter.

This way the switch is protected, no need to change batteries and it will only work if the key is in the ignition and on - preventing someone from walking up and hitting the button. I have had mine in for a year now and has worked fine.

Yup, the red stuff. Tried that too, as I already had some on hand. It still came off a couple days later. I *did* use it to stick my Flash2Pass to the back of my glovebox.

Must have had some grease or other foreign material on there.

You do need to use a solvent to fully clean the two pieces that you want to stick together first.

I stuck my Fenda Extenda on with that stuff and it... well, it stuck like glue!! ;)

Yes, I degreased it with hexane. No, the magnet seems to leave a layer of itself on whatever I use to stick it with. I think they're made of sintered compressed iron powder. That's probably also why it shatters when I drop it or try to drill it.

Here's my set-up. Mini-Genie GD opener located under the seat and hard wired directly into the Fuze Block switched circuit so it will only work with the bike turned on. Two leads run up front to this momentary waterproof switch on left. The right switch with the green LED is for my driving lights.

I salute you for the <strike>cheapness</strike> frugality!! <img src="https://www.fjrforum.com/forum//public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thumbsup.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=" " border="0" alt="thumbsup.gif" />

This might work for you guys that don't want to carry a remote?

Now THAT is funny! :D

This is about the third or forth time I've seen this thread concerning garage door openers. I simply went down to home depot and bought a very small garage door opener that is about the same diameter as a .50 piece and clips to my belt loop. Problem solved! Why the hassle to reinvent the wheel or add a bunch more stuff trying to glue it to your gas tank, hard wire it to your electrical system. I can use mine regardless of which bike I ride or car I drive in. It only cost me about $35 and I've ridden all over the country and the weather, wind or any other element has caused any harm to it. I don't have to worry about anyone stealing it or having it fall off going down the road.

Just Saying!!

That's like asking why do we do anything at all to our bikes? They're perfectly ride-able stock. Different strokes...different folks. :D

Because I don't want one of those swinging and banging away on my keychain, and I got tired of having it on the other bike/in one of the other jackets, and always having to go hunt it down. Plus my Home Depot & Lowe's don't have the small remotes, they only have the 3-button ones that are the size of a large cigarette lighter.

I pull up and start raging on the magnum blasters until the kids open the garage door. Works every time, and even the neighbors come out sometimes to wave at me with their finger.

How about velcro remote on top of the clutch reservoir. My two bikes have velcro on top of clutch reservoir, one remote with two bottons to open gate(gated community) and garage, moving around on bikes and car. When I park out lock it in the glove box with the gloves. Just another idea. Works for me. Have a safe ride everybody.

Also don't forget to put it away if it rains since not many (if any) remotes are waterproof .

Which would also be a really good time to be able to easily open that garage door...

Good ideas, but for the really cheap people out there. . . I put the opener in the outer front pocket of the jacket, simply press the jacket in the right spot and the door opens. Added advantage is I use the same opener for the car in the winter.
I'm a cheap bastard, and lazy too, so that's what I do and it works a treat.

However, since I have an AE I have an unused momentary switch on the left handlebar, the switch that's normally used to enable the hand shift function. I built an "auto enable" device to enable the hand shift automatically every time I start the engine, so I haven't used the switch in close to a year. I figure it would make a great garage door switch since it's single pole single throw momentary contact and normally open. Perfect for a garage door opener.
