gasket replacement

A pal of mine is in the process of replacing the left side engine cover and gasket as a result of a fall.

Should the gasket be mated to the cover and engine case with a thin layer of Permatex type gasket material that comes out of a tube (like tooth paste), or should the gasket be merely installed by itself?

You will get differing opinions on that. If the FSM doesn't call for any I wouldn't use it.

I'm old school. I glue the gasket to the cover with Gasgacinch and a thin film of grease on the engine side. Seals great and comes off easy if needed.

At least a little will help keep the gasket in place.

Clean both surfaces well and then plain gasket, nothing else.
