... who had the brillant idea to put major coolant plumbing right over the valve cover?
I depart on a 6K trip in a week or so and I'm sure that will restore the faith.

Uhhh?..OK, you seem to have made a conclusive decision, keep the faith!

May I add my own experience here? The weekend is over and my bike is in the shop at this very moment because, the last time I had the valves adjusted at 27,000 or so?( there were a couple of tight ones BTW). But (now the rub), on thursday of this past week, when they took off the tank at the shop to check the valves at 57,000 miles (don't know what the measurements were yet?), the o'rings on the coolant hoses were crimped and the thermostat gasket was broken and leaking. I'd been having an increased reading on the dash temp gauge for almost a year (off and on), so I made a point to mention it to the mechanic. The current mech told me that it looked like my bike had been leaking above the valve cover for quite some time. In retrospect, I had neglected to lift the tank to check underneath for a couple of years? Well, now I don't have the bike because a new thermostat is on order from Yamaha.

Don't overlook the small details. It might cost you a trip?

...just some C02

"I had the valves adjusted at 27,000 or so"

"the o'rings on the coolant hoses were crimped and the thermostat gasket was broken and leaking."

"The current mech told me that it looked like my bike had been leaking above the valve cover for quite some time."

"for the average owner whose machine is worked on by mechanics of average ability, there may be more risk associated with doing the repair than just doing nothing."

I rest my case.

:poster_stupid:

If I lived in Fla, there's an above average mechanic down there that swaps FJR engines just for fun that I wouldn't hesitate to have help me out with screwing up my working engine. :derisive:
