Nice to have a spare FJR to (or 2) fall back on.

Enjoy your trip, It will be there when you get back.

Thank you all for the assistance. This turned out not to be so bad. Front clip did not have to come off. The whole windscreen thing was throwing me off, but sure enough it was one of the connectors under the T-bar at the front of the frame. Not the really big one. Not the one that comes directly from the left handlebar switch, but the third one. Out of the 8 or 10 PINs, *one* was severely corroded. Amazing the crazy issues one corroded PIN will cause. ALL connectors were cleaned with contact cleaner and everything is just swell now.

I had serviced these connectors on my first FJR due to the known issues they can cause, but I guess I forgot to do it on this one.

As soon as it started working, my GPS power cable went bad which will be the start of another thread.........

Thanks again everyone.

And wow, this is my 11,000th post!

I would also suspect the mechanism is rubbing a wire in the dash. If you think it is the wiper motor and want to replace it let me know. I bought one on e bay as I just needed the one slide off it and you can buy just that piece, you have to get the whole motor. I just took off that piece and installed it on my motor. I have tested it and it does work. BUT like I said make sure you don't have another issue first.

Just because the Gen. 1 doesn't have spiders doesn't mean it's free from grounding issues. The grounds are still collected and funneled through the same Sumitomo .09 pin MT style connectors which are open to the environment. Be glad it reared it's ugly head a week before the trip instead of 3 days into it.

In case you need to replace the thing, our friend Jim Davis at Eastern Beaver carries the full line of these connectors. He's very reasonable about pricing, and if you load up your shopping cart $80 or more, 3 day shipping (from Japan) is standard. He was my source for components when I was producing both my harnesses.
