One last post, and I'll keep it short (for me).

Cannon ball/feather analogy shows the ratio of weight to inertia is constant. In braking, weight holds the tyre onto the road, inertia tries to keep the bike moving. Inertia is proportional to weight. More correctly, both weight and inertia depend on mass.

Friction force of tyre to road depends on weight. With the bike on the side stand, try pulling your front wheel round. Hard, no? Now put the bike on the centre stand, pull up on the front of the front wheel. Oh, lookee, it turns (rubbing a little black stuff onto the ground, and possibly a little BS onto your hand). So, the more weight, the more friction force available. Just enough to deal with the extra inertia of that extra weight.

Finally, at least in modern systems, ABS doesn't work by bike deceleration, nor by comparing front to back wheels. It works by looking at the individual wheel's deceleration.

Even so, Energy=Mass x acceleration. At a rate of acceleration or deceleration times the mass is equal to the energy required.

At a given deceleration increasing the mass increases the energy.....

I like my ABS and my linked brakes especially when i am tired and the road is slippery. Oh yea they come in handy when the old blue hair turns across your bows and you grab the lever a little harder than you were meant too just because you want to live! That extra foot or two gained because the ABS saved me from my own radioactive brain fart in the braking department may just save my life one day. Dam - wish I was perfect.

Got to do just one more - yes, certainly extra mass means extra energy. You need to squeeze a bit harder on the brake lever to get the same available deceleration from the tyre, the brake discs get a bit hotter to dissipate that energy.
 
Whatever tests on different days in different years show, my arse tells me that my '06 is, for me, the BEST all around motorcycle I've ever owned out of 78 bikes. My '03 was quite good, below 70F once I finally got the suspension set, which took lots of twiddlinnn. On my '06 I haven't had to touch the adjusters, both her ride and handling are noticeably superior to my '03 after I finally dialed in the suspension. ABS brakes are preferred by me to the non ABS style. On the handful of ABS bikes I've had only my '94 BMW R1100RS had the ABS kick in one time-it kept me up and under control.

The only two "knocks" I have (besides the @ 50#s of extra wt.) on my '06 are the tires ('03s BT020s were better, IMhO) and as usual a too soft saddle that bites after @ an hour. Of course as I really haven't been able to ride her since August due to a screwed up neck operation (#2 operation...next week...Merry Christmas....) the saddle isn't much of a problem! I wish it was. Hopefully next year I will be able to ride her and my modified 1200R Sporty....I hope.

So to me Yamahaha pretty well nailed it with the revised '06 FJR 1300A....wottah GR8 bike!!! DFO :D

[/bicker]I know everyone is impressed with the performance of the FJR but hey, in the formula e-mc2 the 'c' is the speed of light! What kind of farkles have you done to get that kind of speed? :blink: I suggest we switch from relativistic physics to classical mechanical 'point physics' and use the formula e=1/2mv2 . Let the esoteric arguing resume with at least one correct equation.[bicker] :lol: :lol: :lol:
If you are experiencing the limits of braking I suggest you go back and evaluate what caused you to have to do this rather than how your brakes worked while performing maxbrake=ohshit*imgonnadie2

But first, I just gots to correct two glaring errors.

First, Energy most certainly is not mass x acceleration. FORCE is mass x acceleration. You've heard F=ma, no? Simple dimensional analysis, and I'm not talking about what the S.O. does when you drop trou, would show you that your statement above cannot be true. You said E=mc2 (after Albert did, btw). mc2 has units kgm^2/s^2. Force has units kgm/s^2. Energy, therefore, is the integral of a force over a distance, not mc^2.

And two, it's SAMMICHES, dammit.

I have ridden both the 05 and 06 models, even though I can't fall back on an official 0-60 time I have a very hard time believing the 06 is as fast as the 05. When I drove my dealer's 05 you had to be very careful to keep his front wheel on the ground in first gear. The front end came off the ground with very little effort in first gear from a 15 mph roll on. My 06 doesn't pull anywhere near that hard, it certainly won't pull the front end off the ground. His bike will all but flip over if you don't let off the gas.
The '06 is wheelie inhibited by the longer swingarm if nothing else.

But, I suspect it also carries more weight on the front tire, both actual and as a percentage of its total weight..

Hi all

Been home for a while, havn't had much to add, just trying to get miles up before it goets too cold. I prefer Swill because it reminds me of what's left of my brain.

Admins - shouldn't this go into Pointless Recurring or We've Flattened This Cat Enough?

Which oil IS best, anyway??
