I installed sliders on my 08 many months ago, but just noticed something I didn't remember anyone here mention or talk about. On the right side there is a pinch bolt for that motor mount hole that the slider bolt goes into. Looks like the only way to get to it to tighten it down is removal of the fairing lower on that side. Just wondering how important it is to have the pinch bolt tightened correctly?

I just ordered a new set of skyway sliders last night and now I'm wondering what the hell your talking about. Guess I'll see when it comes time to install.

Hmmmm... When I installed my sliders last summer, I didn't notice any pinch bolt!

If it hadn't snowed 2" here last night/this morning, I'd run right out to the back garage to check on that.

And your right, I haven't seen mention of this pinch bolt before either. I wonder if it is a later production change?

Will be interested to see what other responses you get before Sunday, when I will have the chance to go take a look.

Thanks for the info!

Don

I believe that pinch bolt hold a sleeve that the engine mounting bolt goes through. I have had my sliders off several times and never loosened the pinch bolt. Just torque the left mounting bolt first, then the right side. The sleeve prevents the frame from being flexed in toward the engine.

I believe that the pinch bolt serves to hold a spacer (#11) in the frame. Both the Factory bolt or slider bolt pass through the spacer into the engine, holding them together. No need to mess with it as far as I can tell.

+1 The pinch bolt secures the spacer, no need to loosen the pinch bolt to remove the engine mounting bolt.

Well, that's what I wanted to hear. I just checked my service manual again and saw the sleeve that goes there in an expoded view of the frame. Glad I'm not going to have to remove any plastic just for that.

I'm sure this will be long-winded and give more information than some wanted but here is my take on the pinch bolts(s):

Pinch bolts serve to allow the components to be tight (left-to-right) in the frame or suspension without using a bunch of shims or putting stress on the frame/suspension. To do this, the NON-pinch bolt side must be tightened first, then the pinch bolt side tightened while the pinch bolt is loose. Fianlly, the pinch bolt is tightened, locking the sleeve in that position.

Now to your question... do I need to do anything with my pinch bolt and how do I accomplish it with the fairing in place? (OK, maybe I added to the question)

IF you took the engine out or had some reason to loosen the pinch bolt, then you would want to do the following:

-Tighten the bolt on the non-pinch side.

-Make sure the pinch bolt is loose (with the fairing panel removed), insert the spacer and tighten the engine mounting bolt to spec.

-Now tighten the pinch bolt.

-Once the pinch bolt is tight, you can remove the engine mounting bolt, replace the fairing panel and install your sliders. The sleeve should be in the correct position.

If you have not ever removed your engine or loosened the pinch bolt, you should not have to do anything except swap your OEM engine bolt for your slider/bolt and torque to spec.

Axles are almost the same. Just remember to have the pinch bolt loose until you get everything else tight and then tighten the pinch bolt to spec. This will tighten everything side-to-side and then clamp the suspension to the axle.

I hope this helps. In my defense, I will say this: It all makes sense in my mind...

Good luck with that, I hope he is now putting metal inserts in the sliders.
I bought sliders from one of our forum members and installed them. I used the hardware that came with them which was bolt, washer(btwn bolt head and slider face), and spacer. You mention metal insert. I that something in addition to what I have installed? Tks, Art

Art -- It depends on what brand sliders you purchased. On some of the cheaper Delrin pucks, there wasn't a steel sleeve included in the puck. Basically, you were trying to torque an engine mount bolt against plastic. The bolt wouldn't (duh!) hold the torque value and loosened constantly. If you purchased a quality set of sliders (or metal ones) there shouldn't be a problem. To check, take one of the pucks off and look for the sleeve (insert) inside the hole.
