I tried to start my 2013 this morning and the engine caught for a brief moment then died, which it's never done before. Since then when I try to start the engine cranks but doesn't start. I can't figure out how to get it into diagnostic mode - I tried turning on the key while holding the RES and either select up or down and nothing happened. Any ideas on what could be causing the no start or why I can't get it into diagnostic mode?

That's pretty much the classic way the FJR acts when flooded.

Hold the throttle wide open and crank the engine in roughly 5 - 10 second bursts with a little pause between cranking. It may take more than 5 bursts before it starts and runs but it will eventually start. I would recommend checking that the battery is fully charged first, if the battery voltage at the posts is less than 12.8 volts, charge it before trying the cranking thingie to make things easiest.

I recently wrote a how-to for accessing the Gen III DIAG but apparently it got deleted, there have been a lot of posts deleted recently.

OK, I figured out how to get into diagnostic mode. Under "Diag" it shows 01. Under "Data" it shows 15.

But big thanks to ionbeam: held the throttle open and cranked and it fired right up after clearing it's throat for a few seconds. How bizarre though - my starting routing this morning was the same as always: I just hit the start button with NO throttle. It wouldn't have occurred to me that a cold fuel injected engine could flood unless an injector is leaking.

DIAG 01 is looking at the output of the TPS. With the throttle closed the 15 you read is the ECU saying that the throttle plates are 15% open, enough to pass idle air flow. While at 01, twist the throttle slowly to wide open and the numbers will climb to 97 - 100 which is the ECU saying that the throttle plates are 100% open.

There are some things that seem to provoke the FJR to flood. One is to start a cold engine and almost immediately shut it off again, your engine starting and dying fits that exactly. But, dying right after starting is not normal for the FJR engine.

Sometimes mine will do it if not fully warmed up the last time it ran.

Did you run it briefly to pull it in the garage the night before?

*edit*

Ooops. I-beam was more faster.. :)

That might have contributed. I last started the FJR on Sunday and only for a moment to move it out of the way to get another bike out of the garage.

I'm glad it was simple. I've got other bikes to ride while wrenching on one, but my wife and I are heading to eastern WV next week for a couple days of riding before attending my father's funeral and I really didn't want her to have to perch on the back of the FZ-09.

Absolutely classic with the FJR, all models, all years. Doesn't do it every time, but it can and does happen, experienced by many owners.

We learn that, if we start it, we let it run until after the cold rpm drops to normal. Then there won't be a problem.
