I get that weave at about 100 or so. Only seems to happen when I've got my barn door windshield up too much. Once I drop the windshield she settles down to normal, but then I almost never hit speeds like that on purpose. Ha !!! Reminds me to back off the throttle. Sort of like a built in alarm that I'm getting a little too hyper when passing somebody. Not a big deal though. Just a little shimmy. 38k on my Exalto and still going strong. 31 psi works for me. Funny how that every couple weeks, I've gotta put a couple pounds in my PR2, but the Exalto? Never seems to vary from 31 PSI.

If I'm doing a ton and get a shimmy it most likely will get worse when the $hit running down my leg fouls the rear tire.

My exalto was good to about 130, then all hell broke loose. Good thing I had both lanes and a wide shoulder to ride it out.

The weave on my Exaltos has generally started at about 135mph. Interestingly, while doing a 2k day in Nevada a few years back on my first Exalto on my 04 FJR the speed at which the weave would develop was anywhere between 125-140mph. This from many data points.

I am not really sure what caused the variance, but I think it was differing road surfaces. Weird.

Was there any wind at the time? I'd expect the flow of air over the bike to be more significant than any reasonable road surface.

But I've never ridden with a car tyre on my bike, so what do I know? (Might possibly have tried it, but it would be illegal here, and would void any insurance.)

Depends on the inspector and the wording of the laws, if any. UK has different safety inspections than the US, certainly. Insurance guys are looking for root cause, if it's not tire related, round and black is all they care to look for, (in the US).

UK law leaves no room for doubt, a motorcycle has to shod with tyres specifically designed for motorcycles. There may be some room for interpretation over whether the tyre is specified for the particular motorcycle model, and maybe the size of tyre, but it MUST be a motorcycle tyre.

Do you have annual vehicle inspections in the UK?

^^^

Yes, annually for any vehicle over three years old.

And it's not just the inspection you have to worry about. The police will look for things like that and issue tickets under the "construction and use" laws.

For example, many of the trucks I see here would be ticketed in the UK because the tires are too wide and protruding beyond the bodywork. It would be an offence. You can fit wide tire but you would have to flare the arches to cover them.

From three years old there is an annual inspection defined by our Ministry of Transport, the inspection is known as the MOT test. It covers many areas of safety and (in the case of 4-wheelers) exhaust emissions. 2-wheelers have to have appropriate conformance stamps on their silencers (mufflers), meet noise regulations, and may include emissions soon.
Our EU legislators are rumoured to be trying to make any non-manufacturer's modification illegal, in which case this would be checked.

I pains me no end to think that we may be headed down the same path.

Well, I made the leap into the endless abyss that is the Darkside. I decided to give it a try since I've been intrigued by the idea for some time, it is inexpensive and easy to try, I will save many dollars if I stick with it and there does not seem to be any substantial evidence that there is any danger in trying it.
Welcome to the Darkside Pterodactyl, you have been listed in the FAQ as Darksider #81. I have also used your excellent photo of your home made brake tension arm in the FAQ as an example of DIY. Thanks for posting that.

You will be notified when the next initiation ceremony is to be held, and what the dress code will be. The Nevada House of Hoes is out on bail, but they insist they want the inductees to wear thongs, and I'm telling you, that's just not a good idea. They will still wear their ceremonial thongs, regardless, but the men need more coverage, some of us...waaaaay more coverage. And ODOT, stop with the creepy lopsided grin already, it's down right disturbing!

Made my first ride today on the CT. 85 miles in MT in temperatures in the mid-60s. Who would have guessed?

I am pleased with how the bike handled. I rode some pretty twisty roads and the reported heavy turn-in and need for constant input while cornering was far less than I expected. I was able to maintain the same 80% effort I normally maintain in these same corners. I did notice the tendency to follow ruts and cracks was more pronounced, but not overly so. I did not detect any rear end squirm or steering fluctuation.

Overall I think I will be staying with the CT.

He is an Army puke, a small size thong, ceremonial or otherwise, should do the trick! JSNS no photo necessary!

Gee whiz, John!!! Those many long and lonely sea cruises with only your bunk mate for comfort have had their effects it seems.

Well guys, this week I am going to "pop my CT cherry". I will be installing a G-Max and will post some pics once installed. The posts on this thread have been very helpful. Unfortunately, it is going to be many weeks before I get the bike out for the first ride of the year. -28 degrees C tonight......
