I've decided I want a bottle of Tequila that I can't get in the states, so I'm going to take a ride down to Mexico and pick a bottle up. Since I rolled into NAFO at such a late hour, I DNS the SS1K while I was there, descretion being the better part of valor and all that. So by running down to Mexicali, that takes me 560 miles out, and a reverse trip making for a 1120 mile SS1K. I figgure a bottle of Tequila is as good a reason as any to go.

Here is the catch. I don't know squat about Tequila past Jose Quervo and I hear that's like bathtub gin to anyone that really drinks Tequila. So I thought I'd toss this out there and let the forum drunks brains take a poke at it. Any good suggestions for a nice bottle of Tequila that won't break the bank? Obviously it has to be available in Mexicali, and my understanding is I can only bring back so much without paying taxes on it. I'm planning on just walking across the border to pick it up.

Tenative plan is to do the run Sat 8/23 leaving San Jose around midnight.

Leave JB at home. He'll just slow you down.

And stop by my place on the way home. Maybe get two bottles....

Last time I was down there, our waiter recommended Don Julio or Herradura, but I'm not sure it's exclusive to Mexico. I like the stuff at Costco, Cazadores Reposado....

You don't have to go Mehico to get it either. But hey, go for the ride anyway.

Oooo Good info already B) I'm going to retract the "exclusive to Mexico" bit since the good stuff usually gets exported. Shoot a PM with your addy, I might work ya in

Thanks for the Link Scab!

eh. Patron will do when nothing better is on the shelf...

Casa Noble. A very buttery finish with a light hint of hazelnut. Pick up a bottle for me while your down there..!

My wife's company (Hood River Distillers) has a sister distillery in Guadalajara. They push out Orendain Tequila. Difficult to find it in too many non-border towns or states (though you can find it in your home state, Silent). Very good. Look for that if you're interested.

Edit - just read through this thread again and I think this came across as a plug for the wife's biz. Not intended. Understand my scope is limited because I am only supposed to drink the things that bring home the bacon! I agree with Toe below, pack as big a variety as you can and taste test at his my house...

Hell, get as many kinds as you can fit in that thing, and when you get (to my) home, you (we) can taste test for yourself (ourselves).

Wowser, I am impressed! I have to admit that you California FJR gringos do know your tequilas. I thought that only we Irish/Mexicanos like myself and vectervp1 knew good tequila. Toecutter is right on with Herradura if you are drinking a white and SockMonkey's call of Casa Noble is perfect if you want an aged tequila. Why not walk on the wild side: DRINK MEZCAL!

The favorite of we Zonies is Dos Gusanos. I mean, how can you go wrong with a mezcal named "Two Worms"!!!

https://www.bmwmotorradgdl.com.mx/video.swf Silent, would you like to ride to source of the tequila con Los Borrachos AZ?

10 of us are leaving Phoenix riding to Guadalajara y Puerto Vallarta Octubre 10, returning on Monday the 20th, muy rapido!

I was on the phone to SkooterG last night about this trip, he is still undecided, but may go as an outrider to the BMW Club.

This event is hosted by the BMW Boxer Club Guadalajara and the Mexican Council of BMWMOA Clubs. On Thursday the 16th all 600 of us get on the Tequila Express train at the GDL station and ride out to the tequila distilleries in Tequila, Jalisco.

After tequila tasting at four of the smaller distilleries, we stop at Herradura for fiesta, la comida y mas tequila. Arriba, Viva!

Herradura Silver... mmmmm....

A little place in Birmingham called Sole Luna makes the best Perfecte margarita with this stuff. All fresh squeezed fruit juice in the mix, no pre-mixed crap.

Corralejo is one of the better Tequilas our there. Casa Noble is really good too, and neither of them are bank breakers. I have never seen Corralejo in the states, but get 2-3 bottles every time I go to Mexico. Only problem is, you will not want Jose Cuervo touching your lips after having good tequila. Have fun.

Agreed. Corralejo is also a very good tequila. The Anejo has a bit of a dry finish, but works really well with a splash of soda and a lime peel twist. I actually found a liquor store up here in Portland that stocks it (but, alas, no Casa Noble...). I was introduced to those two tequilas (as well as a few other really good brands) at a tequila tasting a couple of years ago. Up until then, I thought that Patron was the ****. As I said before, it'll do in a pinch, but having tasted good tequila it's mid-grade at best. At this tasting, the host had us taste 6 premium tequilas and then several top-shelf offerings from the large production brands (Cuervo 1800, Sauza Tres Generaciones, Patron Reposado and Anejo, and Cazadores Anejo among others ). The difference between even Cuervo 1800 and a premium tequila is huge!

I might not be able to finish my SS1K if the tasting begins at your place  Welcome to follow me north, and be an end whitless witness tho :)

Sounds like a blast of a trip, unfortunatly I burned up all my available vacation time for NAFO, so I'll have to pass on that one.

So far it's looking like Corralejo and Casa Noble are on the short list B)
