Seems i was about in the middle of nowhere in central Washington, and the 06/fjr died..no juice! first i check the fuse's, then before I get the cover off I remember the kid saying something about reading these things have a ignition switch that fall apart. so I yank on the wires and nothing..now I'm worried! yank a few more times, jerk em back up in the switch..and the gauges flip on for a sec..OK, thats it!!..find me the hot wire, its gotta be red I figure, and the only other one in the bundle is brown, soooo.. and the wife has her nail clippers in the bag and i cut off the covering and twist them together..zoom zoom! Of course i do touch the frame and blow the main fuse! now we have a problem!...but..I break the top off the fuse ,find piece of a can pop top on the shoulder..nail clip it into a thin piece and stick it into the fuse., and ram a wad of gum in there to hold it together. I figured first dealer id get a fuse...go figure..they didn't have one! so 3000 miles later I am still runnin on the gum..Monday I guess will pick one up locally...and resolder the switch.

wow, glad every time i get a new toy, the kid researches all the problems! This time it really paid off!

First bike in 35 years that EVER let me down, not a nice feeling at all!! :)

Thats 3 strikes now..just add that to the crappy efi on/off glitch and the clunky tranny and I dunnoo....But the 2 up part went well and thats why I bought it, so will take off a strike and back to 2!...will see how it goes.. :)

anyway..thank goodness for the forums and the info within!

McGyver? Is that you?

Don't know about the clunky tranny, but a PCIII/G2 throttle cam will fix your jerky FI.

As for the switch, for whatever reason Yammie started using bad ones in 2006. I expect some sort of fix from them eventually.

I got lucky, thats all(at getting it going anyway)..and in the end I think I know why it came apart when it did....Earlier i got a bad vibration and found it had chucked a wheel weight..shook pretty good a 75 mph..4 hrs later it came apart..i suspect thats what did it as it did my hands in also!.but obviously faulty anyway as nothing else fell apart! As for the spending more money to fix things that shouldn't need fixing?..no, will put up with it till find my next bike. I still love the color tho!! :)

I was waiting for the follow up where his bike burst into flames and burned down the Ancient Bristlecone Pine trees.

want the follow up..??

hows this...next day i get caught speeding, 15 mph over, just not paying attention..being Mr tourist to much......I show the officer the dash all apart, i tell him about the ignition problems and show him i have it hot wired , the gum, and NO gauges work! It looks ugly as i have wires all over the place.. I am a foreigner and looking for a dealer to get it fixed...He is a good guy, lets me go, I slow down..good thing..meet his buddy 15 minutes down the road.... :)

I this the 3'rd strike? Did his buddy get you? Maybe its time for an 08 where most of these problems have been rectified.

What kind of gum?

Post the brand in the FJR tech section, send the company an endorsement, and maybe pick up some swag.

Share it with "the kid".

Congrats on the ingenuity!

BTW, I have first hand knowledge from deep inside Yamaha's inner engineering sanctum that Wrigley Big Red is the best gum to use; much better than Double Mint!

Juicy fruit and big red 50/50, one of each!

Police??I was good for a while after my encounter....longer than I usually am,good thing..!

Just finished taking it apart and resoldering the switch and rebalancing that rear tire.....wish i had read about this first..woulda done it before to make sure..easy fix tho...

No 08 for me..test drove one, no diff I could find..Beautiful bike, but no excuse for the efi thing.....unfortunately the fjr isnt the only one that does this..lots i try out and a few I own also did this, fortunately lots I drove and own don't... :)

As for the tranny..compared to my vfr , they are all like dump trucks..No big deal, just not very sweet.

No 3rd strike yet... :) planning another trip ...

Man it sounds like you got the Friday the 13th bike that rode in the lemon parade trying to be a Harley.... Sorry to hear of all you're problems. I hope it gets better, because my bike has been a dream.

hahaa...harley parade! Actually I had a 02 flht. It never broke..

But mine is normal from what i can see,I knew this and after driving many demo's and friends, listening to all the forum complaints, etc, they are all the same far as I can tell, just things that stand out when u have other bikes that don't have the same glitchs.

But it still is the 2 up bike that fit the bill for me and i got it anyway..i can live with it quite nicely, just the nature of the beast it seems. doesn't ruin a great bike, just disapoints a bit that it aint perfect like it could be..I

As for my bikes other problems i didnt know about, only one was the the ign switch, no big deal, just another excuse for a pitstop.. I dont expect to have any other problems with it.

Actually the other problem is the speeding thing......
