Thought that noise might be cam chain tensioner. But noooo -- mine's a ticker. So if anyone at CFR wants to hear what one sounds like, I can apparently demonstrate.

Bike's almost ready for CFR trip (leaving in 5 days :yahoo: ) and I took it in to Roseville Yamaha to address a couple items (mostly to check the CCT, and to address the trunk mount and TPS recalls). Zac diagnosed it as a ticker, and is ordering all the parts for the tick surgery upon my return.

Glad I have such a knowledgeable and experienced dealership (and service mgr.) to take care of this stuff while under warranty.

Sorry to hear your FJR has the affliction, yet having a great dealer makes it a painless process. Consider yourself lucky.

Given that it's still under YES warranty, I'm not pained at all to learn this. If it's gonna tick, I'd rather it be while in warranty and I'll have more confidence in the tick being banished with the new part no. exh. valve guides after that. Also saves me from paying for the 26K valve clearance inspection, I suppose. :)

And you're so right about having a great service dept. that is well experienced in tick repair. Zac's on his second personal FJR, too -- he's sold his first '05 twice (bought it back in the middle) and has OrangevaleFJR's '05 now. While I've never ridden with Zac, I've certainly ridden a few miles with his bike.

Too bad Rich ... but it will be in good hands with Zac.

In or out of warranty, Yamaha have been real good about repairing "tickers" -- mine was fixed at 28,000 and out of warranty.

Sorry to hear that Rich.

And yes we are indeed fortunate to have Roseville Yamaha in our back yard. Those bastards are great.

Even Dean.

You know HYCLE has had a tick for months now. He refuses to do anything about it.

Calls it "my little friend in the forest".

Is there gonna be a prize for the loudest ticker at CFR? If so, I've got a real shot at it!

Oh No! Sorry to hear you got the tic Rich. :eh-smiley:

Now, I guess(?) I gotta break mine B4 my 4 year extended warranty runs out in October too! :glare:

Maybe I'll just wring mine out heading to WFO, that outta do it? :arrowheadsmiley:

Loudest ticker contest, held under the Yamaha banner with plenty of YouTube video? oooohhh uh oh...

Rich,

My bike is just hitting 24K as well. I haven't seen anything like these https://www.health.state.mn.us/divs/idepc/d...orne/ticks.html on my bike, but was wondering if any had shown up on yours or was it just the noises they make in the dark? Seriously, bummer it happened, but Roseville gets my vote for the best reputation around for the tick. Enjoy the ride up north just the same.

Rich,

Good timing - that 26k valve adjust coulda been spendy if you had to pay for it sans YES. So, now that I'm that is, my friend cough, cough is coming up on another valve adjust interval, purely for personal edification, what steps would one hypothetically take to initiate "the tick", preferably prior to YES expiration in September?

Glad you've got the blackbird to see you through the shop time.

Patrick

I just dropped my bike off at Roseville for a bunch of overdue maintenance. I told Zak if they need any parts to just take them off Ex Skibums bike. :p Zak said Will do LOL.

 He also assured me the good mechanic will be working on my bike and the other one will be working on Exskibum's.

Sorry to hear that news Rich but can you keep us informed (I thought most 05's were said to be ok???) (anyone?)

getting close to warr exp and just thinking how close I need to listen

Exskibums bike will be fixed at a later date. In the meantime they will order all the parts needed.

Also I believe that Yamaha is fixing all tickers Warranty or not at their expense.

Can anyone confirm this about Yamaha repairing tickers outside of warranty? I have the extended warranty (doesn't tick- low miles) and will take me way outside warranty if it does start to tick...That would be great!!!! TIA, Scott

There have been several reports of tickers fixed outide warranty here. The only refusals (once Yamaha officially recognized the problem a few years ago), so far as I am aware, have been on Canadian bikes, so maybe it's a difference between the policy of Yamaha USA an Yamaha Canada. When I get to CFR, I'll seek out Bungie to ask him about that (I think he's been refused).

I worried that with only 24K on it, that if my bike began to tick, it wouldn't be until after the warranty was up. While I wouldn't expect that to be a problem with Yamaha USA's policy, I KNEW that it would get fixed under the YES warranty with no hassles, and regardless of Yamaha's out of warranty tick repair policy.
