You guys are costing me money here, you know. Now I don't dare let her see the 'puter screen and see she has allies. I'm barely holding my own now. :( (Wheaton: don't EVEN think about making a comment about "holding my own". :glare: )

Guess I may be, if I don't get her another set of wheels... talk about a high maintainence woman! ;)

OK-- end of story: I just put down a deposit for a new '06 with a dealer in Bloomington, Illinois. I'll pick it up Monday.

And no, I didn't pay MSRP and no, it ain't a Connie. He matched the stealer's price and threw in a 600 mile service.

Thanks for all the help guys. Being retired and on a fixed income now, I may be hitting you all up for donations.

Powersports is in Decatur, IL.

Going to Sportland. :)
Hey zzzzip, you ended up going with Sportland. Let me tell you that they have a great mechanic in their garage. Cameron has been there for over 15 years and is excellent. Also, Sportland doesn't have much goodies/extras in stock. They have helmets, apparel, oil and tires, but not much else.

Let me know what time you are gonig to pick it up and maybe I'll stop in and say hello.

I plan to be there Monday at 11am, but the deal may not happen.
For some reason they want my social security number and date of birth along with my driver's license number. Maybe you know--- is this some kind of new law in Illinois? The salesman claimed it was Illinois law requiring them to get a SSN.

Now, I have bought 3 vehicles in the last 12 months in Illinois from dealers, and 1 in Indiana. I've had to produce a driver's license(even though 3 were cash deals) for each but never a SSN. They said it was a new law since 9/11. Hey, no problem, I can go along with that, even though I figure Abdul will be smart enough to buy a used car out of the Ad Finder for cash from some good old boy, just like most people who can't legally get a gun do, to get a gun. Being a retired state cop who has done some work in white collar crime, and being around the system, I can understand how some politicians dreamed up a "plan" without thinking it through, and the dealers have no choice but to follow regs. if they want a license.

Someone made an attempt at identity theft on me once, and believe me nobody gets my SSN without a damn good reason. My US passport doesn't even have my SSN on it. He gave me some line about to make sure the title isn't under a wrong name... whatever. I don't mind the US or State Gov't, even my doctor having my SSN, but a car/motorcycle dealer??? Give me a break.

I told him we'd talk about it in person. So long story short, I may be driving 300 miles round trip just to pick up my deposit, and start looking in another state or from an individual. :glare:

The only thing that comes to mind regarding the SSN is that the deal may be predicated upon you financing part or all of the purchase through the dealer (more revenue for them). In this case, they need your SSN to do a credit check to see if you're worthy of a loan.

I paid msrp and got mine in two months. Two months compared to a "I don't know when" and reading of some having to wait 6-9 months to get one, to me it's a no brainer. If I didn't have one now and had to pay msrp again to get one now, where do I sign. I figure I may not have that much time left on this sod, time that can be used to ride, to have to wait for months so I can save money that I will not need after I die.

No financing involved. I gave them a choice of cash or a check from my credit union. They wanted the check.

I could understand needing a SSN for cash because it would exceed... I think $10,000 is the cutoff for cash transactions.. the limit not requiring a CTU to be filed by the bank. Has to do with money laundering, drug trade, etc., but as I recall that was an IRS issue and requirement when I regulated gambling casinos.

So... being fearless and pure of heart, I will find it difficult to give a false SSN.... but not impossible, if necessary.

Zzzzip, you know I'm not sure about the SSN. I bought mine in Litchfield, IL back in April and seems I remember having to give them my SSN too. I can't remember why though. You know, I've slept since then and have already perged my memory. Tell you what though, I'll ask some of my buddies at work tomorrow morning and see what they say. They're younger and smarter than me. :dribble:

Anyhow, I wouldn't let that be deal breaker, but you do what you need to do. I'll let you know tomorrow morning if I find out anything from my homies at work. 11:00 is around my lunch time so I'll see if I can scoot over there. Keep us informed of the saga!

Thanks.

I should be mellowed out by now, but sometimes it still doesn't take much to trip my pissed-off switch. Don't mean to sound like an *** about it, I can do that on more important issues.... like Jennifer and Brad.

I'm not blameing them for doing what is mandated... even if it could be counter productive. I'm sure I can find a way to make us both happy, and ride off into the sunset. :)

Memo to self: Buy next bike from Honest Smitty at the Hooterville Flea Market-- bring cash and gun to trade. :glare:

Hope to see you.

Zzzip, I asked around and actually I have a buddy that purchased a new car recently. He said that there was a form he filled out that asked his SSN. He thought it was on his credit application. Like I said before, I'm pretty sure I gave my bike dealer my SSN too but I didn't do any financing through them. I remember questioning him about it but don't remember what he said.

That's the best answer I've got for you. If I was you, I would ask to see the form that requires the SSN.

Again, I'll try to make it over to Sportland sometime after 11:00am.

Well, Skippy's wife is happy again. Here's his new ride.. Congrats Skip.....

Zzzip, sorry I didn't make it to Sportland. I rode my bike to work and was hoping to get over there but with the storms we had I just wasn't able to make it. So, did you trailer it or ride it back to Missouri? Any comments on your experience with Sportland? You like the 06?

Expected rain so I trailered this time rather than run new tires on slimy pavement (just light showers in my area) and risk a new bike and old ***.
Read dealer discussions thread.

Got 4 inches of rain last night, and rained all morning. So it has not been ridden... yet. B)
