Easy day.

I thought we were going to lose Bust for sure when we rolled pass a field full of sheeps somewhere between SSM & Sudbury...

Thanks to Steve and Ray for the escort. I've got pictures to post as well. Life is calling right now, trying not to answer, but it doesn't care that I rode 1100+ miles yesterday...

And I see Tony is on the go this morning already. Safe travels dude.

He couldn't have picked a worse week for this. It is going to be hotter than hell for this entire week. I hope he has a serious hydration system on his bike, he is going to need it. In my area, where he will be coming through later today, they are talking about highs in the upper 90's, with a heat index of about 107. OUCH!
Although this type of heat and humidity is horrible to those of us who live in this part of the country... it's actually pretty typical weather for the area of Florida that Tony lives in so he's probably a lot more comfortable than any of us would be.

Granted he's accustomed to that kinda stuff Bill, It did take a toll on him yesterday.

Not saying anything bad mind you but between the major lack of sleep and the heat Tony was down pretty low.

As Wayne and I were also pretty cooked we didn't really notice.. Thankfully Ray showed up at just the right time and served up a spark that rekindled the fire..

It cooled off when the sun went down and the rain north of here certainly help re-invigorate him I'll bet.

It would be cool if one or two guys could position yourselves at a fuel stop or two today. Toss some water on him and make sure he's holding up.. ;)

Looks like he is stopped at the rest ares just south of where I work. I don't blame him, they are a nice place to take a break, and he has been going pretty hard.

Anyone care to explain the Lake Michigan route? Is it really worth it to go that far out and around Chicago? Seems like a hundred extra miles or more. I'd think I43 from Green Bay down through Milwauke would be an OK ride. Getting though Chicago would be lousy, but once past Gary, IN. it'd be clear sailing to Grand Rapids. What am I missing?

Disclaimer: This is a theoretical question, I have no interest in ever riding an SS1000...

I believe it was to avoid traffic in Chi-town. 100 "extra"' miles at highway speed in this weather is a very reasonable alternative to sitting still for any amount of time. Traffic can be a real time killer. It cost us Sunday on the north side of Toronto. Luckily, the Canadian Government enacted a temporary legislation which authorized lane splitting, lane co-use, and road shoulders by 2 wheels vehicle traffic (but only when traveling in groups of 3). Thank Oh Canada...

I was planning to meet Tony first at St. Johns, then at SSM when he hit the end of the Lake Mighigan SS. It looks like the heat is taking it's toll on his schedule and our paths won't cross this time. I pulled up in St. Ignace after 500 or so miles and was happy to be out of the heat. Hopefully it will cool down some now for him and he can get through to SSM on time.

I think that was a part of the reason, and the other is that he is adding mileage to the Great Lakes SS's so that he will have enough mileage for his 10/10ths goal as well.

He's still on track for his planned 0400 arrival Paul..I'd say if you were to be sitting near the north shore crossing around 3 you could catch him there. Tony will hit the soo, I guarantee it

I would say very lucky.... If you say what did happen and seen by the people with the black and white cars you all would be walking for 7 days. A lot of things fall under the stunting law.

Sorry: hijack over

Tom,

We just ran down the shoulder with the intent to jump off at the next exit; I stayed just above flow of traffic (which was moving around 5-10mph). I thought the back up was just volume induced; turns out, there was an accident in the left lane (minor fender bender, tow truck on scene); once I saw that, and the flashing lights, we jumped back in line. I'm sure this was not too popular with the cagers nearby, but they were perfectly comfortable inside with the A/C on high; we were feeling the full brunt of 97 degrees.

Probably would have gotta tagged if we'd just blasted past out into open lanes; we probably could have stuck it out in the stop and go another 30 minutes or so, but good scoop on how it could have been interpreted and cited as "stunting".

I've used this same strategy before to avoid sitting in the heat in the states (construction back ups where there was a wide and open shoulder) with out getting a second look by LEO's. Only for short distances, usually always to get to an off ramp once it was in sight and to escape to shelter or re-route.

Is he meat on a stick yet?
And yes, I"ll bet Tony is just about medium-well meat on a stick by now. Hopefully, he's getting some relief being close by the lake.

Not quite done but...

The man is not taking the easy path that's for damn sure.

1. No aux fuel

2. No aux lights

3. No GPS (well he has one but it's not working)

4. No faceshield (lost on the LS1000).

5. No hotels. (and I hear the lady running the rest area he's been using keeps running him off at o'dark thirty).

If you can help with the faceshield please check this topic.

Derek: Other than the shield issue, how is he doing?
Well he's having some issues but is in good spirits. His shoulder and hip were giving him some pain after fighting through a storm that had him down to 5 mph in some severe wind. But his sense of humor is still firmly in place, allowing him to enjoy the ride despite all the mishaps he's encountered. And he hasn't lost his ability to bend your ear. Should make for a stellar ride report.

His front PR2 was cupping a little but should be OK for the rest of the ride. His GPS is no longer working...which may explain that extra 50 miles he tacked onto his LS1000.

He did report seeing a mountain lion. I assured him he wasn't hallucinating as there have been reported sightings in Minnesota.

Another forum member (pmeysemb) showed up he was refueling and had a sign that read "Go Pathfinder". :yahoo: Paul provided escort duty to get Tony through the Duluth construction and on his way to Wisconsin.

I'm hoping he gets his faceshield issue resolved. Otherwise the constant wind in his eyes may become a problem.
