At the bottom it indicates it took effect of September 1st. Anybody heard anything? I haven't except for a mention in the new Cycle World.

I can't remember any details. But I think it basically got ignored for other legislation and therefore didn't even get voted on.

Honesltly, the thought of lane splitting in Austin both excites me and terrifies me. I think it would take 3 years before these idiots had a general understanding of lane splitting. At first they (cagers) would simply be angry, me thinks!

It did pass.It took effect 9/1/05.

The law states that the operator of a motorcyclemay operate the motorcycle for a safe distance between lanes of traffic congestion if the operator:

1 is at least 221 years old

2 has successfully completed a motorcycle training course

3 is covered by insurance of at least $10,000 in medical benefits that covers motorcycle accidents

4 operates the motorcycle:

A at speeds no more than 5 MPH over the speed of traffic

B in traffic moving less than 20 MPH

C not in a school crossing zone or an other area where the speed limit is less than 20 MPH or less.

I live in ca. where it is legal to lane split, but these rules seem a little strict. Like

5 MPH limit over moving traffic.

Well, if you have ever had the experience of trying to get into or out of New York City during commuting hours you would be happy to go no more than 5 mph faster than the congested traffic. That would be a grand total of about 6 mph. Unfortunately, in NY I'm afraid you'd probably get yourself squashed or shot by some motorist who simply couldn't tolerate you getting ahead of him.

The referenced effective date was "if it passed". It didn't get out of committee, so was neither passed nor defeated. For the moment there is no lane splitting law.

There is the "developed shoulder" rule though. Know it. Live it. Love it.

I haven't noticed many cagers "getting it" here in central California. They're pretty much just pissed that someone else is getting ahead of them. I think my splitting helps traffic flow, in that at least the first two cars at the light go faster once it turns green than if I wasn't between 'em. Dickswabs.

According to the same thread on the BMWLT forum, it did not pass but rather died in committee.

I dunno, Toecutter, maybe its the cage operators in Fresno? In Sacramento, the Bay Area and Los Angeles I've found not many problems involving lane sharing . Sure, there are those who have moronic tendencies and are frustrated at the traffice, but, all-in-all, I find people willing to give me room. It always helps if you follow a CHP bike, but....Just kidding! :bleh:
