...I'm rather surprised myself that the FJ is quicker considering the superior engineering of the BMW although, when you get into these speeds, just the weight of fuel in the tank seems to make a difference...

$20,900 for a base GT

$25,845 for a loaded GTL

MSRP $15,590 (Cobalt Blue) Available from November 2011

BMW has had 10 years to take dead aim at all the players in the Sport Tour market. They show up with SIX cylinders, canbus and electronic controls worthy of a jet. The 1600GTL owners think that paying 40% more than a FJR is more than justifiable based on the returns. The fact that the differences between the FJR and the 1600GTL isn't starkly black and white is surprising.

Gotta agree with Wheaties on this one. Just because a bike is more modern, or has more gizmos on it does not make it better engineered. It just makes it newer. Which one is faster out of a light doesn't dictate better engineering either.

The bike that is still rolling at 200,000 miles with less maintenance and repair cost is better engineered.
Minus the ground spider issues and stuff like that I presume.

I don't think there are any 1600's out there yet with 200,000, are there?

To clarify, my experience driving the Beemer left me an Audi vs Nissan type feeling. The bike was far smoother, better balanced, much lighter feel and definitely better fit and finish. Doesn't mean I didn't prefer the FJ, clearly I did - it's far more fun and I like the looks better. But the BMR is far more sophisticated which I described as better engineered. How that translates to an on the road experience I suppose is subjective.

Despite it's size, the Beemer felt to small for me too.

...so I'm cruising through the desert a couple of weeks ago, minding my own business, loafing along on my FJR at about 60.

Well, up in the sky behind me comes this smartass Air Force dude in his fancy, over-priced F-15. He pulls alongside me and we size each other up.

Pffft. This guy obviously doesn't know what he's dealing with. I downshift into 2nd and you shoulda seen the look on his face!

............jus' sayin'.
Well of course! The FJ is clearly better engineered!

I agree whole-heartedly with that assessment. Yet another reason why I have the FJ.

gee, I thot it was just cuz yer a cheap assed federal employee?

Low blow! Catering to the crowd? I'm disappointed :(

Why do you have your FJ, by the way? Oh yes, I remember (I won't tell).
Dude...I think she's kidding. If you've been paying attention, she's been taking shots at everybody today. It doesn't help that our forum Kiss Ass Beemerdons is egging her on.

I'da thought by now you woulda grown some thicker skin...Guess not.

Here's another worthless 2 cents.....

I really couldn't give a rat's rectum who's bike is faster in a straight line. If I did, I would just buy a V-Max or a stretched-swingarm Hayabusa with nitrous. Go ahead, knock your dragstrip-self out.

Engineering quality? Having several friends that have owned both new and old BMWs, I'll keep my Honda and Yamaha, thank you. As my friend with the BMW told me once, "BMW.....Don't believe the hype."

That said, if that's what you want, let capitalism reign. Buy it! Isn't freedom great?

Why is the thickness of my skin in question and not that of those who took a positive remark about the Beemer so personally as to suggest my words are pollution?

On second thought, forget it. I clearly do not fit in here.

On a serious note, thanks for all the help you folks have been thus far. I've received some great advice. :thumbsupsmileyanim:
