Over two years ago my wife was in an accident and totaled her bike and almost herself. Lately she has been getting the urge to pilot her own ride so today we traded the 500 polaris that never got used for a 06 1200 Sportster.

She needed a cruiser sitting position because her hip got run over by a truck and it doesn't bend like it used to. I'm going to sign her up for the safety course tomorow and get her back on the road. :yahoo:

Will post up some pictures when it gets here. I told her to get some assless chaps and some fringe.

It's a big step to accept getting back on the road after an accident. Doesn't matter what she rides, it's great she can share the good times. FWIW, I rode across the country with a guy on a Sportster. Don't underestimate it.

I am thrilled that she is going to give it a chance. We have lots of back roads with little or no traffic and should have some time before the snow falls.

I do a monthly ride with a guy that rides a sporty and he makes fools out of a lot of sport bikes. It's a combination of the tool and the operator.

The Sportster could be the best of both worlds for Patti.

The torque curve should make it an easier bike to ride than the I-4 Kawi 750; the upright seating position should be great for her AND the small gas tank will mean she can get off and stretch more often.

Sounds like a win-win-win to me. The camaraderie of riding with your best friend/life partner: Priceless! :clapping:

Good for her. I can only imagine how hard it would be to get back on a bike after what sound like a very bad accident.

I had a 09' 1200 Sportster Low and it was a lot of fun. I actually kept it longer than most of my other bikes. Sadly no matter what I changed as I've gotten older my back can't take the cruiser riding position for very long and I sold it.

Hope it works out for her :)

Jon...

That's great she wants to get back on a bike again Ray. Please convey well wishes to Patti, and for her to have fun with the MC safety course! :)

Never heard anything bad about a sportster. Except for the small fuel tank. And I assume that was a complaint only because people were sad they had to stop to refuel instead of continue riding.

'tis a good thing Ray.. It's been three years since the wife expressed an interest in piloting her own scoot. Buddy's wife died on the highway on her scoot and she's yet to recover.

Good wishes to Patti an you with this.

I congratulate her and you also. Just riding with your wife is priceless. We both started on Sportys and kept them for 16 years. They are rock solid dependable. With a bit of tweaking they can be very comfortable. The new ones have rubber mount motors unlike our old ones. Mine is 17 years old and I have put over 150K on it. It is for sale now due to my upgrading to an FJR. My wife sold hers and got a Dyna. You will have a lot of fun. The fuel tank is small; but people forget that these machines started as flat trackers....long long ago. If you folks ever get up here to N. Idaho you be sure and look me up. I can take you on some beautiful roads.

Woot-WOOT for Patti and her desire to ride again -

that gal has major cajones , err, something!

Was there to see the lust in the eyes for a Sporty on the return NERDS run..

and thought, at the time.

it's only a matter of time -

..and now is it's here!

This is way cool!

Rock on Patti!

If'n I remember right 06 is still a carbed bike. Meaning 3.2 gal Walnut tank and 4+ gal Faux Fat Bob tank is available. Throw on some leatherlyke bags https://www.leatherlyke.com/stores/showdetl.cfm?&DID=13&Product_ID=68&CATID=1

and point in any direction. Happy riding to the BOTH of you, especially her!

It's the XL1200C so it has a carb but it also has the big tank.

She has been warming up on a neighbors dirt bike to stsrt with and she says this weekend she and the sporty are going for a ride :yahoo: Gotta find some quiet pipes for the damn thing or she has to stay a 1/4 mile behind me

I'm thinking that tear-off OEM pipes for a Harley are not difficult to find Ray!

Congrats Patti!
