You never said what kind of "solvent" you were using to clean the lens in the first place. What was it? Glad you got them back to nearly clear.
Brake Cleaner.

Not something I'd use normally, but it was handy. I squirted some onto a cloth just to wipe the glass ... well you know the rest :)

It was like .... You know that feeling that comes over you when there is the dawning realization that you just did something really bad. it starts in the pit of your stomach, and spreads like a wave coming up the beach, shifting sand in the eddys and rolling tiny shells around. Then the full enormity hits you and you don't have time to curse, merely becoming resigned to the shock as your brain registers the truth ... "Oh my God ... it's plastic".

CRC, the common brake cleaner contains these major ingredients:

Methanol, Toluene, Acetone, 3-Methylhexane, n-Heptane, Methylcyclohexane, Naphtha (petroleum), Cyclohexane, Ethylbenzene

Several of these players individually would eat plastic, but here they all come together in a perfect (****) storm. I'm pretty sure this is the same stuff in my toothpaste.....

I don't want to be the (possible) bearer of bad news. Keep an eye on the lenses - you may find that they crack or craze over time. Depends upon how much solvent was absorbed. If it goes that far, the only fix is a replacement headlight bucket. (good luck)

Nope, I don't know that feeling. I myself have never done ANYTHING stupid. I've also never thrown a tool in anger either.

No toluene but it used to contain chloroform (not any more; at least not in North America).

Isn't Toluene the home planet of Luke Skywalker?
