Hello to all.......Just bought a 2004 with 4k miles on the ticker(no pun intended). Somebody never rode it apparently.I love the feel of the fjr for what it is. I think it is going to make a great commuter. However...the heat issues and ticking issues seem to be a part of the gen 1 bikes. I had a 1997 FZR100R that ticked with 1200 miles on it when i bought it. Yamaha had it inspected and said it was normal. boy what a crock of ****. I then bought a 2001 gsxr1000R. No such troubles. With such heat generated under the tank, will it not cause anything rubber to crack(ie.intake boots, vacume hoses, synch rubber cover thingies, and anything else rubber under the tank?? I maybe paranoid but logic tells me in the past experiences with yamaha products it is inevitable that the intake boots will crack. I guess when it does it does. In the mean time man this is a great middleage man sportbike!! :yahoo: i will be commuting 60 miles a day so at the end of this summer and next that is when time will tell.........

P.S. I contacted Yamaha about any recalls their may be. The TPS had been done in 08. I told them about this and other fjr websites that had individuals with ticking and heat issues. They said if you don't contact them and tell them about your issues they cannot resolve them on current and future models. Sounds like a good answer ay? :glare:

Sell it and buy a vespa.. I hear those minimal output engines run real cool..an chicks dig 'em.

Whodafuknows why.

Iv'e had my 04 since Jan. Since I live in Az and it gets pretty warm, I just installed a insulated blanket under the tank and inside the plastic side covers. My tank got pretty hot before this and now it dosen't, but that frame gets hot enough to burn ya when ya touch it. (and I hope that the bubble wrap/foil insulation a lot of people use doen't melt.) Gonna ride acroos the desert to San diego tommorow. So I quess i 'll see how this blanket really works!

Don't mind the harmless clowns on the forum. They add levity and keep us from feeling too serious. It's helpful.

The heat issue is well discussed. Perhaps more than any subject on this board. There are several useful methods of controlling the heat on Gen 1 bikes. Most of us with the Gen 1 bikes do some heat control.

The best way to find the info on this board is to search first using google. Try "heat fix site:fjrforum.com" and you can read for hours. One useful rider called Cromeit devised this solution Cromeit. A heat blanket under the tank is another common method, as is keeping the tank full and keeping the bike moving. And wearing the right gear and on and on and on. You'll find it all when you search. (and it keeps the jokers at bay).

Good luck.

I take it the insultaion liner under the tank is not factory? This unit has one under the tank. The frame does get smoking hot. It is only 85 today!!If that is normal i guess that is the way it is..........I have a gear head friend who told me their are alot of bikes that have heat issues. I love the bike. it has good torque. Nothing like a Hayabusa but I'm not bent over and having to ride at 100+ to make it an enjoyable ride. Thanks for the input....looking foward to puting miles on her.....

Your balls will fry and cause you to crash long before the rubber dries out.

No major reported problems with Gen 1 heat causing failures. Gen II, on the other hand, has had some under-tank cracking electrical connections reported that could be heat related.

My 2005 had some insulation under the tank. I added another layer with stick on silver backed insulation used in aircon and heating systems that I picked up at Home Depot. It helped. My tank no longer gets too hot to touch. The frame - especially the left side by my thigh, really cooks. That's were good riding gear comes in. And it helps to keep your knees bowed out from the tank a few inches to allow more airflow.
