No one asked if you are using an heated vest. I find that is the first place to start if you find you are getting cold. It has been discussed before but when you start to get cold the body shuts down the blood flow to the extermites to keep the all important core warm. The first sign is fingers getting cold. Trying to heat just them wouldn't work if the core is signaling it's cold. I find that with my vest and decent gloves I have no problems with fingers. The Vstrom guards and heated grips will no doubt help but probably shouldn't be the only choice.

You can't warm your house with a couple of space heaters. You need a furnace.

+1 on all of that. The other important consideration is eating properly before you ride. If your body is properly fuelled and your circulation is not restricted and you are not gripping the bars too tight then you shouldn't need much else.

+1 Good advice there. I only wear my heated gloves on the coldest days, and, even then, it's only because I have them, not out of necessity. That being said, I picked up some Symtec grip heaters and some new gel grips late last fall. Mostly because I was planning a grip change and while their off...

I figure a little blast of heat when caught out in a cold rain would be pretty enjoyable on the mitts.

Good point. I always wear my heated vest when it's cold enough to need the heated grips and mittens.

There's running wires up your sleeves and adding electrical connectors to your bike, and there's mounting big fugly mitts on your handlebars, but there are much simpler approaches. Unless you ride a LOT in extreme cold, these things are awful handy. Check them out here for one. 40 pairs for about 20 bucks at Sam's Club, but available lots of places. Carry a couple pairs in your bags. One in each glove lasts all day and gives off lots of heat. LOTS. I drop them down under the palm. They're thin enough they don't interfere with my grip and fit in any glove I've tried them in. Very simple solution.

I really like the setup that I have on my FJR. I originally had just a set of Symtec grip heaters that were installed by the original owner. I replaced the High / Low switch with a Heattroller mounted in the dash. I then hardwired a cable, terminating in a coaxial DC socket, in parallel with the grips and left the loose end of the coax cable hanging up near the ignition switch so I can plug in a Y cable for my of heated gloves, which are then also controlled by the same heattroller.

When it's too cold out for just the grips, having the warm grips in your palms helps the heated gloves do their job even better. I find that I never really need any heated jacket or pants liners, just good insulated gear does the trick for me. But it would be nice to get some heating help for the feet someday.
