heated grips=stiffer throttle?

Ordered a set of heated grips from yamaha through a dealer when I bought the 08 for the 08. Recently had them installed at a dealer and now the throttle is a lot stiffer. Picked the bike up and they stated they had to change the throttle housing to accomodate the wiring for the grips. Looking at the paper work in the pkg box it states grips are for 06-07 fjrs. Did they make them different for the 08s and later? Reason I got an 08 was for the better throttle operation. Going back to dealer on Tues to try and unravel this. Input?

Heated grip kits come in two versions, one for the Gen 1 and a different style (plug and play) for the Gen-II. Your bike is a Gen-II. The Gen-II supports a dual-power arrangement that applies more power when the bike is rolling, a 'speed sensitive' design according to Yamaha - more like a 'gimick' according to me.

I did my own install and found that there was no difference between the before and after pull tension on my '06 . . . perhaps something is binding on yours, but being familiar with the installation I can't see how.

The throttle tube is changed as part of the process.

As you probably know, the throttle pull cam was redesigned for the '08 and onward model years - I was under the impression that the changes were at the throttle body end of the system, but perhaps they changed something up top?

If indeed the changes were on top, then you have just retrograded your pull to that of the'06 and '07 . . .

There shouldn't be a difference between standard grips and heated grips. I'd wager your grips are dragging on the housing a bit. If thats the case, you might be able to just pull it back a bit and have normal throttle return again.

My guess is that after reassembly, the throttle cables are now too "tight", causing too much drag.

Try loosening the cables, especially the return or closing cable.

That's what happened with mine. I just had to pull the grip out a bit.

Might also be the grip is not push "far enough" in toward the housing and dragging on the bar weight. Remove the bar weight and see if it gets easier.

The farther you advance the throttle the more resistance, like pulling a spring. The first little bit is easy as it was before the swap then more resistance as you advance.

Do the wires to the grip have slack through out the range of the twist or are the wires starting to tigthen?

Check the wire for the grip and make sure there is enough for the throttle to move. If the wire is getting tight then that needs to be fixed. If it is not that then look at your throttle cables. Take the bard end off and see if that changes anything.

Getting the grip wire into the housing is a pain in the *** and can get stuck on itself in the housing.

The different throttle tubes from 06-07 to 08 will not change the tension on the throttle. It will make the throttle a little more sensitive.

Hell, just take the bike back and tell THEM to fix it! Then do all your future work yourself B)
