That same grip/controller combo is available under several different names, even called Goldwing Heated Grips in the Service Parts catalog.
The grips don't get hot because their resistance is too high. The controller is a nasty piece of work that supplies power in pulses -- BANG -- BANG -- BANG, very hard on the electrical system. Better controllers vary pulse width for much smoother power delivery. I've tested the Big Bike controller under different load conditions and it has shown that the controller shouldn't be used to power grips with lower resistance. More on heated grips here. Post #19 has the electrical test information.

Ionbeam references a good thread. I also have the dualstars hooked up to heattrollers. They worked well. I later improved their performance by putting an insulating sleeve on the clutch side so the heat wouldn't dissipate into the handlebar. On top of the heating element (both sides) a layer of aluminum foil helps circulate the heat more uniformly across the whole grip. And behind grip guards, they're downright toasty!

What did you use for the sleeve?

Thanks, Kevin

the big bike parts grips are now on their way back to jc whitney and i have a hole in the cowling to take care of.

can i get the original grips over the dualstar heaters? what is best method? jerry

I've got the same grips (I think) marketed under a different name and they work great. Usually have to turn them down after 5 minutes because my hands get too warm. Go figure...
